Make a call on your Google smart speaker or display

You can make voice calls with Google smart speakers and displays. With a smart display, you can also make video calls. Before you make a call from your speaker or display, set up the calling methods you want to use.

Important:

  • Incoming and outgoing 1:1 calls are supported on speakers and displays.
  • Incoming group calls are supported on displays.
  • Incoming group calls aren't supported on speakers.
  • Google Home Max and Nest Wifi point don't support making or receiving calls.
  • Outgoing group calls aren't supported on speakers and displays.
  • Outgoing calls to the same Google Account and linked phone number currently signed into the Nest device aren't supported.
    • The system recognizes the device as the "caller" and can't simultaneously be the "receiver."

Important: This feature may be restricted or blocked by Downtime, Filters, or Do not disturb if Digital Wellbeing is enabled.

Voice calls are available on all Google smart speakers and displays through Google Meet. If you live in the US or Canada, you can also use Google-supported or mobile calling with Google Fi and Google Voice.

Use voice commands to start a call

You can use voice commands to start a call once you’ve set up your preferred calling method.

Say "Hey Google," then:

  • "Call [contact name]."
  • "Call [business name]."
  • "What is the nearest [business]?" then "Hey Google, call them."
    • You'll get a prompt to add the name and number to your Google contacts.
  • "Call [phone number]."

Use your display to start a call

You can make a call with the touchscreen if you’ve set up household contacts on a smart display.

  1. Swipe from the top of the display screen.
  2. Tap Communication.
  3. Tap Call on the "Household contacts" screen. The calling method used depends on the contact selected.

Start a video call

You can make video calls with Google Meet.

Video calls are available on Google Nest Hub (2nd gen), Google Nest Hub Max, and Google Nest Hub. Make sure the device you use for calling has a camera. Nest Hub (2nd gen) and Nest Hub can receive video but can't send video.

Start a group call (smart displays only)

Important:

  • Group calling is available in English in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.
  • This feature may be restricted or blocked by Downtime, Filters, or Do not disturb if Digital Wellbeing is enabled.

You can make group video calls with Google Meet on Nest displays. This feature is available in English in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada.

To start a group call:

  1. From your contact search box, pick the contacts you want to start a group call with "Hey Google, start a group call."
  2. Start the group call.

Depending on the group size, the screen might not show everyone in the call. To view someone else in the call, tap the overflow and select the person you want.


If Digital Wellbeing is enabled, this feature may be restricted or blocked by Downtime, Filters or Do not disturb.

Receive a call on your smart speaker or display

You can receive Google Meet calls on your smart speaker or display.

  • To answer a call, say "Hey Google, answer the call."
  • To decline a call, say "Hey Google, decline the call."

On some devices, you can also use these touch controls:

Google Nest Audio & Google Nest Mini (2nd gen)
  • To answer a call, tap the center of your device.
  • To decline a call, tap and hold the center of your device.
Google Home Mini (1st gen)
  • Tap the side to answer.
  • Press and hold the side to decline.
Google Home
  • Tap the top to answer.
  • Press and hold the top to decline.

Tip: To temporarily block calls at undesired times, change your call settings.

Mute or unmute a call (smart displays only)

  • To mute a call: On your Nest display screen, tap Mute .
  • To unmute a call: On your Nest display screen, tap Unmute .

End a call

To end a call with your voice, say "Hey Google," then:

  • "End the call"
  • "Hang up"
  • "Stop"
  • "Disconnect"

To end the call with a touch control:

Speakers

  • Google Nest Audio and Google Nest Mini: Tap the center.
  • Google Home: Tap the top.
  • Google Home Mini: Tap the side.

Important: Touch controls for calls aren’t available for Google Home Speaker.

Displays

  • Google Nest Hub Max and Google Nest Hub: Tap End call.

If the recipient ends the call, you should get an end call tone.

Check activity

You can get a voice recording of the query used to start the call, or queries used with the voice assistant in My activity. No other information is recorded.

Google doesn't retain:

  • Voice data
  • Google Meet calls
  • Google to mobile device calls

Google only saves:

  • Call duration
  • Errors
  • Number of calls
