Collaborate with Gemini in Gmail

With Gemini in Gmail, you can:

  • Summarize an email thread.
  • Suggest responses to an email thread.
  • Draft an email.
  • Find information from previous emails.
  • Find information from your Google Drive files.
  • Get information about Google Calendar events.
  • Create events in Google Calendar.

Feature availability

We're working to make it easier to use AI directly in Gmail. As such, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra subscribers in the US may no longer see Ask Gemini in Gmail or be able to open the Gemini in Gmail side panel. Powerful AI experiences in Gmail, such as AI Overviews and "Help me write," continue to be available directly in the product.

Get started with Gemini in Gmail

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. In the side panel, select a suggested prompt or write your own prompt. Select a suggestion
    1. Select from the list of suggestions.
      • To get more options, select More suggestions.
    2. At the bottom, in the prompt box, replace the example text with the info that you want.
    3. Press Enter.

  4. Optional: To remove your history, click More options and then Clear history.
Tip: To avoid losing your history, copy a suggestion into your email. You lose your conversation history when:
  • You refresh your browser.
  • You close and reopen Gmail.

Things to ask Gemini in Gmail

Ask questions from the web

Important: To get answers from the web, make sure to include phrases like “Use Google Search” or “Using web search” in your prompt.

  • “Write a paragraph describing the weather today in Mountain View, California using web search.”
  • “Help me write a paragraph explaining if lightning can strike the same place twice using only information from the web.”
Create events

Important: Gemini in Gmail can only create events on your primary calendar.

  • “Schedule a lunch block for tomorrow at noon.”
  • “Create a weekly run on Fridays at 8 AM.”
  • Based on an open email: "Add this to my calendar."

Tips:

  • To specify Google Calendar in your request, at the beginning of your prompt, add "@Calendar."
  • If Gemini in Gmail detects information about events in an email, an Add to calendar button appears above the email. When you click Add to calendar, Gemini in Gmail extracts the relevant information from the email to add to your calendar. It will ask for confirmation if there are multiple events found. 
Draft an email

Gemini can draft a new email or a reply.

  • To draft a new email, ask Gemini to create the draft.
    • Examples:
      • “Write an announcement email for the launch of Project Clover.”
      • “Create a thank you note to a colleague for their work on Project Clover.”
  • To get suggested replies:
    1. On your computer, open an email thread.
    2. Click Ask Gemini .
    3. At the bottom of the side panel, click Suggest a reply to this email.
Find information from previous emails

Gemini can get information on reservations, flights, packages, and other emails sent to your inbox. For example:

  • “When is my package arriving?”
  • “What time is my next flight?”
Generate a Google Docs document

Important: This feature is available through Gemini Alpha (for work accounts only and enabled by organization), and Workspace Experiments (a trusted tester program for personal accounts). Learn more about Workspace Experiments.

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a Google Docs document. 

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt, for example: 
    • “Create a meeting notes agenda.” 
    • “Generate a draft with a response to this email.” 
    • “Create a quick project coordination doc with a 30/60/90 plan section.” 
  4. Click Submit .
Generate a Google Sheets spreadsheet

Important: This feature is available through Gemini Alpha (for work accounts only and enabled by organization), and Workspace Experiments (a trusted tester program for personal accounts). Learn more about Workspace Experiments.

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a Google Sheets spreadsheet. 

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt, for example: 
    • “Create a sheet to track my monthly expenses with columns for date, category, amount, and notes.”
    • “Create a table for a project tracker in Google Sheets with columns for task, assignee, deadline, and status.”
    • “Create a 10-day itinerary for a first-time visitor covering Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka.”
    • “Create a visual dashboard in Sheets of this sales data.”
  4. Click Submit .
Generate a Google Slides presentation

Important: This feature is available through Gemini Alpha (for work accounts only and enabled by organization), and Workspace Experiments (a trusted tester program for personal accounts). Learn more about Workspace Experiments.

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create a slide in Google Slides with a single prompt. 

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “Create a slide on quantum computing for a general audience with a modern design.”
    • Optional:
      • To give your presentation the same style as an existing slide deck, you can use @<presentation name> to reference it. For example: “Create a presentation based on @old_project”.
  4. Click Submit .
  5. To refine your presentation plan, you can answer Gemini’s follow-up questions. You may also see recommended sources that you can add for Gemini to use as it generates your presentation.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Keep the tab open until Gemini generates your presentation.
    • This may take up to several minutes.
    • You can switch to other tabs or windows, but do not close the existing tab. 
  8. Once the presentation is generated, you can open it in Google Slides to view and edit. Learn more about how to generate presentations with Gemini in Google Slides.
Generate images

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to generate images.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the bottom, type your prompt.
    • Example: “Create an image of a dog with glasses.”
  4. You can also:
    • Change your prompt: Click Edit prompt edit.
    • Send feedback about the generated images: At the bottom, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .

  • “Where can I edit my email filters?”
  • “How can I create a label?”
Get information about your events

Important: Gemini in Gmail can only give you information about events on your primary calendar.

  • “What’s my first meeting tomorrow?”
  • “When’s the next time I’ll meet with Lori?”

Manage tasks & show suggested to-dos

Important: This feature is available through Gemini Alpha (for work accounts only and enabled by organization), and Workspace Experiments (a trusted tester program for personal accounts). Learn more about Workspace Experiments.

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to create and manage tasks and ask questions about your tasks, including suggested to-dos from chats and emails that need your attention.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • “What tasks do I need to do today?”
    • “Add a task to complete the project proposal today.”
    • “Change the date of that task to tomorrow instead.”
    • “Mark the Friday workout task as complete.”
    • “Delete that last task.”
  4. Click Submit .
Reference other files to edit or refine content

You can ask Gemini in Gmail to use specific files to write, edit, or refine content. For example: “Update the project timeline based on the latest updates from our meeting notes doc.”

  1. At the bottom bar, click Sources and then Add from Drive.
    • Or, you can type “@” and then search and select from the menu.
  2. Select one or more files.
  3. Click Add.

Search for certain types of emails

Gemini can search for your emails that are unread, from a specific date range and from specific people. Gemini will load the results in a Gmail search. For example:

  • “Show my unread emails.”
  • “Emails from [person] sent last week.”
  • “Show unread emails from this week.”
Summarize an email thread

You can ask for a summary from Gemini in Gmail. For example:

  • “Create a list of action items for me based on this email.”
  • “Explain this email to me like I’m 5 years old.”
Use a Gem

Important: Not all languages support Gems. Learn more about supported languages for Google Workspace with Gemini.

  1. On your computer, open Gmail.
  2. At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
  3. At the top left, click More options .
  4. Click the Gem you want to use.
    • To find more, click View all.
  5. Select a custom or premade Gem.
    • To start a conversation with the Gem, type a question or prompt at the bottom.

Tip: To create a Gem, go to gemini.google.com. You can then use your Gem in the Gemini app and Gemini side panel. Learn how to use Gems in Gemini Apps.

 

Give feedback on generated output

Google Workspace with Gemini is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.

If you get a suggestion that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can submit feedback.

  1. Below the generated output, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  2. If you click Bad suggestion , you can select the issue you found and enter additional feedback.
  3. Click Submit.
