Change the language of your uploaded video

You can only change the language of a video that you uploaded. Learn how to check for available captions when watching videos in different languages.

The video language setting is a feature used to help YouTube and contributors understand the original language of your video. This feature helps when adding subtitles and captions to YouTube videos. It’s also used to help viewers find videos in their language.

Change video language

You can change the language of your uploaded video if it's been incorrectly set:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio .
  2. From the left menu, select Content .
  3. Click a video’s title or thumbnail.
  4. Scroll down and click SHOW MORE.
  5. Under "Language and captions certification," choose the intended language of your video, its title and description.
  6. To save the changes you made, click the SAVE button at the top of the page.
Note: If you change the setting for the original language of your video, the future translated subtitles will use the new language as the source for translations. Your published and draft subtitles and closed captions won't be affected.
