  • It’s dimensional lumber so it’s not actual size but before they started shorting them for profit, they were called 2x4s because they measured 2 inches x 4 inches. 4x4s, 6x6, 1x8, 2x12, etc. They all represented actual dimension of the lumber but you’ll notice that today, they are basically 1/2 inch short in every dimension so a 2x4s actual measurement is 1 1/2" x 3 1/2".

If you tear apart the walls or look in the attic of a home built in the first half of the 20th century, you’ll see lumber that actually measures their stated size.

  • I don’t think I have a preference, both bring me a lot of long-term joy. My family is big on poems for birthdays and holidays and they are also great at meaningful gifts. My daughter made a father’s day playlist on Spotify and wrote an entry for each song with her memory of what we were doing when she heard the song. I often play it and have read the accompanying notes so many times, I’ve memorized it so I get a little burst of dopamine for each song, no matter what I’m doing or where I am.

  • Perhaps it’s more complex than a single reason but I believe all scenarios would most likely fall into the bucket of “things were that easy for them and they lack the critical thought to realize that it’s not that easy for everyone else”.

Boomers were buying houses and cars with only one person working, retiring at a decent age and living on mostly social security.

Generational wealth has ensured that their offspring would never have to struggle.

Some settled into a job that truly does pay for all their necessities.

    etc., ad nauseum.

Basically, it’s a throwaway statement and I don’t think anyone should lose any sleep feeling like they need to further discuss it with them or defend themselves. They are clearly incapable of stepping outside of their knee-jerk assumptions to find out if they’re accurate or not.
