about

The Green Kingdom is the long-running project of Michael Cottone, a composer based in Shelby Township on the outskirts of Detroit, whose unmistakable electro-acoustic Ambient music has graced labels such as Home Normal, Lost Tribe Sound, Dronarivm and Sound In Silence. Recording under this moniker since the early 2000s, he has steadily refined a sound shaped by guitar, texture and atmosphere, often building pieces from simple sketches on guitar or keys before layering, looping and gently reshaping them into something expansive yet intimate. Across more than two decades of releases, his work has consistently balanced melodic warmth with a subtle sense of melancholy, drawing on influences as varied as Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Boards of Canada and Stars of the Lid, while always remaining rooted in his own unique voice.

His latest album Vespera continues to follow this path, but with a slightly different emphasis. While guitar remains central to the sound, many of these pieces began at the piano, lending the album a more hushed and reflective tone than some of his previous work. Built from softly processed piano motifs, reverb-soaked guitar lines, sampled textures and the occasional synthesizer layer, the record unfolds with a calm, airy patience, allowing each piece to settle into its own space. Asked to pick three words to describes the sound of his album, Mike chose “evening, calm and airy” which feels entirely fitting for a collection so steeped in stillness and gentle atmosphere.

Though Vespera does not follow a strict narrative concept, its title gives a strong sense of the mood it inhabits. Derived from a Latin word associated with evening or the evening star, it points toward the album’s twilight character - a space of dim light, quiet reflection and slow transition. As the pieces gradually coalesced, Cottone found they carried what he describes as “a kind of dusky vibe”, balancing darkness and light in equal measure. There is a softness to the record, but also an emotional depth that keeps it from drifting too far into the purely decorative.

At its heart, Vespera feels like an album designed to offer room: room to pause, to reflect and to simply sit with sound. That sense of openness has long been one of The Green Kingdom’s strengths, and here it is distilled into a particularly elegant form. With its measured pacing, luminous textures and subtly sullen undercurrent, Vespera stands as another quietly absorbing work from one of Ambient music’s most dependable and enduring voices.
