Most WordPress themes want to be everything at once – fast, flexible, beginner-friendly, and somehow still unique. Blocksy makes the same claim. Yeah… but does it actually hold up, or is it just another free theme using the same marketing angle?

Blocksy says you can build a sharp-looking website in minutes, no coding needed. That’s a bold promise so I wanted to find out how true it really is.

This Blocksy theme review is for people who want a theme that just works – without needing to struggle every time they change a font or tweak the layout. I’ve gone through the features, tested the workflow, and looked beyond the shiny words on the homepage.

You’ll find a real-world take on what Blocksy gets right, where it’s misunderstood, and who it’s best for. If you’re building a WordPress site anytime soon, this review might save you some trial and error.

Let’s get into it.

An introduction to Blocksy

Blocksy theme.

Contrary to what the name might suggest, Blocksy is not a block theme – not an FSE theme.

It is a classic theme with modern customizations that bridge the gap between what you’d think is possible with classic themes.

That said, it’s a theme that works well with the block editor and other page builders. On top of that, it packs a number of really nice starter themes. Those come in multiple different flavors, with more designs for new niches being released every month (I know – I’m getting the newsletters).

And, of course, you’ll find all the “standard” niche designs too – agencies, shops, restaurants, blogs, portfolios, and more.

The theme has been downloaded 5,693,094 times already (and counting), and has an impressive 100% rating on WordPress.

The main version is available for free, but it also provides premium plans if you want more designs or could use some of the more advanced features.

Blocksy’s key features ⚙️

Let’s start the main section of this review by looking at Blocksy’s main features:

Performance-focused design

Blocksy claims to be a lightweight and blazing-fast theme. It advertises a 95% Google PageSpeed Score and a 100% score on GTmetrix PageSpeed Score. Okay, so let’s test that…

Here are the results (running one of the starter designs on a random web host):

Blocksy performance results using PageSpeed Insights.

As you can see, this is pretty impressive. All I did was activate the theme on our test site, import a starter design, and then run a test on PageSpeed Insights.

Granted, I did test a sample design here without adding any actual website content yet. So, the performance score might drop once you add your own text, images, and other elements – and that’s totally normal. The goal of this test was to measure how well the theme itself performs before being filled with content, which is what really matters at this stage.

Then I tested the same website on GTmetrix. The result was good as well, although the LCP wasn’t the best. However, this metric is mostly due to the web host used for the test:

gtmetrix blocksy

Overall, this looks very good. Blocksy was built on the latest web technologies. The theme uses a Webpack-built pipeline that only loads code for the features you need. Additionally, it uses the latest JavaScript language features for smoother performance across all browsers.

The main settings panel

Blocksy does a lot to make the key features of the theme available front and center. The first thing that a new user should do is go to the main settings panel – available straight from the WordPress sidebar.

In there, you’ll find shortcuts to the most important settings, starter design installers, and more.

blocksy dash

In a nutshell, most site owners will want to go through those eight sections to configure the most important areas of their design. It’s good that all of them are nicely available through here:

main sections

One of the tabs gives you access to free extensions and pro upgrades, too.

blocksy extensions

I like how the free extensions solve a couple of common pains for site owners from a practical point of view – like, everyone needs a cookie consent banner, most will need a newsletter subscribe, and so on. While the pro upgrades take this up a notch with a truly useful and sometimes advanced functionality – like the advanced menu for example, which is a favorite of mine.

WooCommerce integrations

Blocksy integrates seamlessly with WooCommerce. With the free version of the theme, you get the following ecommerce features:

  • Multi-vendor compatibility
  • Advanced archive options
  • Advanced single page options
  • AJAX add to cart
  • Single product options: payment icons, reason to buy, tab styles
  • Product variation gallery

If you upgrade to a premium version, you’ll also enjoy WooCommerce elements such as a floating cart, product quick view, a wishlist, variation swatches, free shipping bar, size guides, and a lot, lot more.

Blocksy’s design features 🎨

Let’s now look at Blocksy’s design customization capabilities.

How to customize Blocksy

As mentioned earlier, the theme was built to be fully compatible with the block editor, while also delivering its main customization features in the WordPress Customizer.

After going to Appearance → Customize, you’ll see something like this:

customizer

In here, you can begin customizing your site under General, Header, Footer, Sidebar, Colors, and Typography.

Each section delivers a range of sliders and toggles letting you fine-tune even the smallest detail of the design.

There’s also a very nice header and footer builder. Basically, just grab the widgets you’d like in your header/footer and drop them in a specific area.

Then, you can take full control of your post listings as well as individual post pages. You can pick a layout, tune up the elements on page and their design.

Furthermore, when writing blog posts, you can also customize them on an individual basis.

What you’re seeing is Blocksy’s own section in the block editor. It enable you to customize the structure and design of each page from the editor, and you also get some control over which elements to display on each page. For example, you can disable the header, footer, featured image, and share box. If you’re working on a post, you also have the option to disable the post tags, author box, and related posts.

Starter designs

Blocksy makes it super easy to get started with a ready-made web design. It offers a selection of starter sites that you can easily import into your site:

starter designs

When you select a starter site to import, you’ll have the option to use it with your page builder of choice – usually the native block editor (aka. Gutenberg) or Elementor:

Whenever importing a design, you can choose which specific elements of it you want to import – be it just options, widgets, example content or all together.

import settings

In my opinion, the scope of starter designs available is really impressive. They’ve managed to include most niches that are present online, and even some that are rather small and original. For example, you’ll find designs for a barber shop, a renovation company, a florist, cleaning service, and more.

This might be your go-to solution if you’re looking for something original yet still very modern and optimized.

Typography and colors

Fonts are an important part of your branding, so you’ll need some level of flexibility when it comes to typography. Blocksy lets you set fonts for different heading levels, as well as buttons, quotes, and more:

You can pick from hundreds of Google fonts. Plus, you can also upload your own fonts and have them hosted locally on your site’s server.

Blocksy is also strong when it comes to the color controls it gives you. There’s easy access to the design palette. You can save custom colors, change palettes, plus assign colors to different elements of your design.

Blocksy pricing (free vs pro) 💵

Blocksy is a freemium theme. Most of the customization options mentioned above are available with the free theme.

However, if you’re looking for more advanced features, you might consider upgrading to a premium plan. This will give you access to additional elements, such as:

  • Multiple conditional sidebars
  • Custom code snippets
  • Custom fonts (+ support for variable fonts)
  • Local Google Fonts
  • Adobe Typekit fonts
  • Advanced menu (mega menu)
  • Copy customizer options
  • Shortcuts bar
  • Additional header and footer features

If you have a small website like a blog, you can get started with the Personal plan for $42 per year for one site (or $140 lifetime). The Business plan is ideal for online shops and ecommerce sites, and starts at $60 per year for 10 site licenses (or $210 lifetime).

Meanwhile, the Agency plan is designed for freelancers and agencies. It starts at $90 per year and comes with unlimited licenses (or $350 lifetime).

Final thoughts 🧐

Blocksy is a popular WordPress theme with great ratings. The free version comes with a lot of customization options, while the premium plans offer more in terms of ecommerce functionality and advanced site customizations and extra features overall.

I’ve been enjoying this theme for a while now, and can easily recommend it to all casual as well as pro-sumer WordPress users who like to experiment with stuff and customize their sites more than the next person. In other words, this theme gives you a lot and also manages to deliver it in an easy to use package.
