Importance of Cockpit Country
Cockpit Country is the largest remaining natural forest in Jamaica. The fresh water it stores and releases via almost 40 rivers, streams, springs, upwellings, glades and ponds supplies about 40 per cent = of Western Jamaica’s water needs.
Climate Change
Climate Change as an effect of global warming results in severe climate & weather conditions (landslides, hurricanes, drought etc) as a result of an influx of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to the reduce in the rate of photosynthesis (process of converting sunlight + carbon dioxide + water into glucose and oxygen)
Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and many cannot survive the deforestation that destroys their homes.
Removing trees deprives the forest of portions of its canopy, which blocks the sun’s rays during the day, and holds in heat at night. This disruption leads to more extreme temperature swings that can be harmful to plants and animals.
