Contribute

To contribute to OpenHistoricalMap, go to the main map, zoom in to a place of interest, and click the “Edit” button. If you are familiar with editing OpenStreetMap, the OpenHistoricalMap editing experience is very similar. See the tagging guidelines for information on a few changes we’ve made to accommodate the time dimension.

We also maintain several software projects to facilitate map contributions and data reuse. Please report any issues and send us your ideas on GitHub or our forum.

Selected establishments and disestablishments on December 31:

1903: The Manhattan Bridge in New York City open to traffic.
1908: Penticton, British Columbia is incorporated as a district municipality.
1937: In the Philippines, Carcar's rotunda is inaugurated.
1963: The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland officially collapses, leading to the establishment of Zambia, Malawi and Rhodesia.
1983: A coup d'état ends the Second Nigerian Republic.
1992: The Czech and Slovak Federative Republic is peacefully dissolved, leading to the establishment of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic the next day .
2010: The Zhanjiang-Xuwen Expressway opens to traffic in Guangdong, China.
