“‘Flattering’ Is Subjective, Deeply Rooted In Misogyny, And Isn’t Body Positive”: People Are Sharing The Fashion Hills That They Are Willing To Die On

“Some of my longest-lasting clothes that still look brand new years later are fast fashion.”

If you're someone who regularly tunes in to Paris Fashion Week events, the Met Gala, or celebrity red carpets, you definitely have a few controversial fashion opinions up your sleeve. And even if you're not, you've likely come across social media trends in recent years that have sparked more general fashion hot takes in your everyday life. After all, you don't have to be a fashion expert to know whether you love or absolutely hate "jorts" (those in the latter category will probably agree with #13 on this list).

So, when someone asked, "What’s your most unpopular fashion opinion?" we wanted to see what people had to say. While some responses are convincing, others are a bit concerning. Here are some of the most controversial takes:

Note: Some responses were also pulled from this thread.

    1. "Extreme trouser fits looked ridiculous. The current wide-legged trend makes you look like you're wearing clown trousers. Skinny fit makes you look absurd. Just wear a normal-fitting pair of trousers with a slightly tapered leg, and we're all happy."

Person in white t-shirt and wide-leg jeans walking in a parking garage, holding a phone, with paparazzi in the background

    2. "As a designer, I refuse to add pockets. It disrupts the silhouette. Pockets are only allowed on pragmatic, utilitarian outfits."

    3. "'Flattering' is subjective, deeply rooted in misogyny, and isn’t body positive. People usually say something is flattering when it makes you look skinnier."

    —u/Ok-Writing9280

    4. "Some of my longest-lasting clothes that still look brand new years later are fast fashion. A lot of times, polyester outlasts other fabrics and still looks brand new five years later. I think that's better for the environment than replacing things over and over. Unless you're buying from an independent, small batch company, chances are what you're buying is indeed fast fashion (your High Street brands included)."

    5. "I loathe the look of long pants and open-toe shoes. Barrel jeans are f------ ugly, and the denim maxi skirt trend made everyone look Pentecostal."

Person in a long denim skirt, buttoned blazer, and shawl, holding a handbag and talking on a phone while walking on a city street

    6. "I hate this current trend where most clothes in stores are beige, cream, brown, black, and white, and all have the same style, especially the sleeveless tops with an off-the-shoulder strap. Waistcoats as tops are also ugly!"

    —Inevitable-Necessary

"I’m thrilled to see the back of warm neutral sludge colors that dominated for years. Nobody looks good in puke-toned linen."

    —u/mullumbimbo89

    7. "WE HAVE BEEN CONDITIONED TO THINK JEANS ARE COMFORTABLE, BUT JEANS ARE NOT COMFORTABLE. They are treated as a kind of default pants choice for any leisure activity, but why? If you’re riding a horse or a motorcycle or working on a farm, I get it. But denim is thicker and rougher and stiffer than most materials one could choose for pants, and they have those hard seams and metal studs. Those are not features of a comfortable pair of pants."

    8. "Sweatpants always look lazy and uninspired to me. I've never owned a pair and never will."

Person wearing casual white top and orange sweatpants, carrying a beige bag, surrounded by three people on a street

    9. "I feel uncomfortable when people wear extremely revealing clothes to the gym. I don't like seeing a genital outline through bike shorts."

    —u/challawarra

    10. "Linen as a fabric for summer. I can’t stand it, and therefore can’t stand shopping for summer clothes since stores are full of it."

Person in a flowy, knee-length dress walks confidently on a city street, wearing sunglasses and high heels. Background pedestrians are visible

    11. "When people say ‘I can’t afford to buy sustainable’ in many cases, they really mean ‘I can’t afford to consume sustainable at the pace I like to consume fast fashion.’"

    —u/gijjer

    12. "Everything can look good. There’s no such thing as a bad item of clothing. Context is everything."

    —Ms-Watson

    13. "The only jorts I want to see is Jorts the Cat. Otherwise, keep them far away from me. ESPECIALLY if you're wearing them with flats. 🤦🏻‍♀️💀"

Person in a stylish, distressed cardigan and black denim shorts, walking outdoors. Accessories include sunglasses and black pointed shoes

    14. "Most people wear their tops/outerwear too tight and would look better if they sized up one."

    —u/PhonyPapi

    15. "Cargo pants never suited anyone ever. Not in 1996, and not during any future resurgences. Jennifer Aniston and her low slung orange ones have a lot to answer for."

Person with braided hair wearing a blue graphic jersey and camo pants, holding a bag and phone, on a city sidewalk with a crowd in the background

    16. "When people criticize an outfit for looking like a costume, it is usually a projection of their own insecurities. They know they can't pull off that outfit themselves or certain pieces. Sometimes, instead of just saying they don't like it, they just say it looks like a costume to make it seem like their critique is more objective and substantiated than it really is."

    —u/SarmSnorter

    17. "Wearing anything even remotely 'gorpcore' around regular streets is the equivalent of driving an H2 or Jeep Gladiator around your suburban existence."

Person walking outdoors in layered winter clothing: oversized jacket, loose pants, knitted hat, gloves, and colorful scarf with tassels

    18. "Clothes don’t have to be flattering. You can wear something just because it makes you happy, even if it doesn’t suit you. Along the same line, some trends are meant to be unflattering, and that’s what makes them look new and different (i.e., barrel-leg jeans). And once they are no longer trending, they will give everyone a good laugh when they look at photos."

    —u/theloneliestdonkey

    19. "Joggers (pants/sweats with an elastic hem) are hideous but great if you want to look like an overgrown toddler. They were the official pant for people who shop at the mall and think they're the pinnacle of fashion."

    —soccerperson

    20. "I think designer anything that has labels all over looks terrible."

A stylishly dressed person is wearing patterned outerwear with a skirt, large sunglasses, and walking on a city sidewalk. Onlookers are in the background

    21. "Band tee gatekeeping is good. You really shouldn't associate yourself aesthetically with a culture or subculture that you don't actually partake in."

    —u/Individual-Rip-2366

    22. "Black doesn’t really go with most colors and shouldn’t be a default neutral in your wardrobe."

    —u/ver_redit_optatum

    23. "Arc'teryx has always been for dorks; just the type of dork changed. Back in the day, it was for dentists going on their yearly ski vacation; now it’s for trendy TikTok 'gorpcore' youngins that would’ve bought Supreme bogo hoodies a decade ago. There are so many other great outdoor brands to choose from that don’t make you look dweeby and actually have interesting, fashionable designs and great functionality while displaying some character besides being the obvious big trend. It’s now the panda dunks of the outdoor gear world; whereas, it used to just be the rich, smug yuppy brand."

    24. "Comfort isn't just about how you feel physically, but emotionally, too. I am 100x more comfortable in heels than sweatpants."

    —u/Gloomy_Astronomer861

    25. And lastly, "I think there are always better options than standard chinos. They lack texture, are too plain, and not interesting in any way. Choose woolen pants, linen, denim, corduroy, or cotton, but give me something more to look at and feel. They are popular because they are easy to combine and versatile. But why? Because they are so simple. Too simple for me."
