The 10 Best Fuel-Efficient Cars in Canada for 2025

by Stephanie Wallcraft

Fuel efficiency is a long-term game. Buying a car that uses less fuel may not save you any money up front. In fact, in the case of a hybrid vehicle, it could even be a fair bit more expensive. Plus, many people buy cars based on the fuel costs at the moment when they’re shopping. In reality, choosing a fuel-efficient car can save money as gas prices fluctuate during the time you own a vehicle. It’s a good idea to buy smart up front and burn less fuel over the long run.

Below, we’ve listed the 10 best fuel-efficient cars you can buy in Canada in 2025. Note this isn’t a straight-up ranking of the 10 most fuel-efficient cars on the market. Rather, this list covers the 10 cars that are very frugal on gas that we think will serve most Canadian households well. Note we’ve only included non-electrified gas-powered vehicles and conventional hybrids here. If you’re open to a vehicle with a plug and low or zero emissions, check out our list of the best plug-in hybrid cars and electric vehicles in Canada.

You’ll note four prominent vehicles are missing from this list. We’ve chosen to leave off the Honda CR-V Hybrid due to its higher-than-average starting price, and we’re also setting aside the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid for now due to its persistently long wait times. The Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact car has also dropped off this list as it was discontinued at the end of 2024. And the smallest car left in Canada, the Nissan Versa, is not quite fuel-efficient to make our short list with a combined fuel consumption rating of 6.8 L/100 km.

Prices shown include manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) plus destination charges and dealership fees but not options or sales taxes. While current at time of publication, prices are subject to change.

2025 Ford Maverick Preview - summary

Ford Maverick Hybrid

The Blue Oval’s pint-sized pickup truck, the Ford Maverick, made a big splash when it arrived in 2022. It comes with both non-hybrid (EcoBoost turbo) and hybrid powertrains. The latter is significantly more efficient and pairs a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 191 horsepower, sent to front-wheel drive (FWD). New for 2025, an all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrain is now available with the hybrid powertrain. Fuel consumption ratings for the Maverick Hybrid rank at 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving, 6.7 in highway driving, and 6.2 combined. With its 52.2-litre fuel tank, this means the Maverick Hybrid can go more than 840 kilometres on a single fill. This combination of fuel efficiency and truck functionality means this might be the right-sized truck city and suburban dwellers have been waiting for. The 2025 Ford Maverick Hybrid starts in Canada at $36,795.

2025 Honda Civic Hybrid review summary

Honda Civic Hybrid

A new home-grown fuel-efficient option has landed for the Canadian market. The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid compact sedan is assembled at Honda of Canada Mfg. in Alliston, Ontario, alongside other Civic sedan models. This FWD compact car uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine coupled with hybrid drive to produce a combined system output of 200 hp and 232 pound-feet of torque, sent through an eCVT. These figures make it by far the most powerful hybrid car in its class. According to Natural Resources Canada, the Civic Hybrid’s fuel consumption measures at 4.7 L/100 km in the city, 5.1 on the highway, and 4.9 combined. The Honda Sensing suite of safety features and driver assistance technologies is standard on the 2025 Civic, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist, plus blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are included as well. The Civic Hatchback is also offered with the hybrid powertrain and is built in Greensburg, Indiana. Pricing on the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid starts in Canada at $35,562.

2024 Honda Accord Hybrid review summary

Honda Accord Hybrid

The Civic Hybrid isn’t Honda’s only excellent hybrid car. If you’d prefer something roomier, check out the mid-size Honda Accord Hybrid. This powertrain has made up the majority of the Accord line-up for the past couple of years, featuring in every model but the base trim. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and two-motor hybrid system generate a combined system output of 204 hp and 247 lb-ft of torque, sent through an eCVT to FWD. In the Accord Hybrid, a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wireless charging pad is also included along with numerous safety technologies including automatic high beams and traffic sign recognition. Official fuel economy figures measure up at 5.0 L/100 km city, 5.7 highway, and 5.3 combined. Pricing for the 2025 Honda Accord Hybrid starts in Canada at $44,962.

2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Now that the mid-size Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has been discontinued in Canada, the compact Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is the Korean automaker’s sole electrified car in our market. It uses a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce a combined output of 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a six-speed automatic transmission, all while returning a fuel economy rating of 4.8 L/100 km in city driving, 4.5 on the highway, and 4.7 combined. With those figures, the Elantra Hybrid is one of the top 3 most efficient cars you can buy without a plug. The 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is available exclusively with the Elantra’s Luxury trim and is priced in Canada from $33,785. (If you’re shopping for a used vehicle and want something similarly efficient, consider the discontinued Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid.)

2024 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In

Kia Niro Hybrid

The Kia Niro entered a new generation for 2023 and continues to be sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and full battery electric variants. In hybrid guise, the new Kia Niro Hybrid comes with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor that combine to produce 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. With impressive fuel economy ratings of 4.5 L/100 km in city driving, 4.4 on the highway, and 4.4 combined in its most fuel-efficient version with 16-inch wheels, the Niro Hybrid has a driving range of nearly 950 kilometres and takes the top spot as Canada’s most fuel-efficient hybrid. Pricing for the 2025 Kia Niro Hybrid starts in Canada at $33,526.

2025 Kia Sportage Hybrid Plug-In

Kia Sportage Hybrid

Apart from pickup trucks, the compact SUV is the best-selling body style in Canada. And among those, the Kia Sportage Hybrid and its closely related cousin, the Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, are two of the easiest small crossovers to recommend in hybrid form. We’ve given the Sportage the edge here over the Tucson for its more approachable styling, slightly better fuel efficiency, and lower entry-level price point. On the fuel consumption side, the Sportage Hybrid uses a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and an electric motor to produce 177 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, sent through a six-speed automatic transmission to all-wheel drive. Fuel economy is rated at 6.1 L/100 km in city driving, 6.3 on the highway, and 6.2 combined. Two hybrid trims are available, the EX Hybrid and SX Hybrid. In Canada, the 2025 Kia Sportage Hybrid EX starts at a price of $41,630, while the 2025 Kia Sportage SX Hybrid starts at $47,330.

2024 Lexus ES Hybrid Preview - summary

Lexus ES 300h

There are two hybrid brands that many Canadians turn to by default. One is Toyota thanks to popular vehicles like the Prius and RAV4 Hybrid, and the other is Lexus. For the latter’s part, the ES 300h hybrid mid-size sedan is one of the most fuel-efficient luxury vehicles on the market, particularly among those with a conventional hybrid powertrain (which Lexus likes to call a self-charging hybrid). The 300h is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor combo that produces 215 horsepower while burning only 5.5 L/100 km in city driving, 5.2 on the highway, and 5.3 combined. Since it’s a Lexus, you can also expect lots of standard features and a level of interior quality to match Audi and BMW. In Canada, pricing for the 2025 Lexus ES 300h starts at $59,354.

2024 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Toyota Camry Hybrid

It’s no surprise that nearly half of the top 10 best fuel-efficient vehicles in Canada come from Lexus or Toyota. The latter’s midsize sedan, the Toyota Camry, entered a new generation for the 2025 model year for which a hybrid powertrain is now the default for the full line-up. It combines a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and Toyota’s hybrid drive system to create a combined output of 225 hp with FWD and 232 hp with available AWD, managed through an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (CVT). Fuel economy rates as low as 4.9 L/100 km city/4.9 hwy/4.9 combined with FWD and tops out at 5.3/5.5/5.3 with the AWD XSE. The long list of standard safety features includes lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and automatic high beams. Pricing for the 2025 Toyota Camry starts in Canada at $37,295.

2024 Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

The Toyota Corolla Hybrid is unique among the market’s compact hybrid sedans in that it’s the only one available with AWD. This gives the Corolla a serious advantage over its long-time rivals such as the Honda Civic, Volkswagen Jetta, and Mazda 3. AWD was introduced for the 2023 model year and remains standard on most trims in Canada. The 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine and electric motor combo generate a combined 121 horsepower. Without AWD, the LE consumes 4.4 L/100 km in the city, 5.1 on the highway, and 4.7 combined. Add AWD to the LE and those numbers become 4.6 city/5.4 hwy/4.9 combined, while the SE and XSE AWD grades come in at 5.0/5.7/5.3. Unfortunately, the hybrid powertrain is only offered with the sedan body style, while the Toyota Corolla Hatchback is sold with the less-efficient gas-only powertrain. Pricing for the 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid in Canada starts at $29,985 with FWD and $31,485 with AWD.

2024 Toyota Prius Review Lead In

Toyota Prius

We round out this list with the perennial go-to for fuel-efficient hybrid driving: the Toyota Prius. This isn’t the humdrum Prius of old, though: the new generation launched for 2023 came with a sporty new look and greatly improved drive dynamics. It employs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that combines with two electric motors to produce 150 horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque, a 60-percent increase over the previous version. AWD is standard for us here in Canada, and with it the Prius averages 4.8 L/100 km in the city, 4.7 on the highway, and 4.8 combined. Those gas mileage figures are good enough to keep the Prius within the top 5 most fuel-efficient vehicles sold in Canada with no plug and the only vehicle with AWD to land within that window. The 2025 Toyota Prius carries a starting price in Canada of $41,160.
