Police search for driver, passenger who fled wreck

Police are still searching for two young men following a crash in Sydney's south-west that claimed the lives of two boys.

00:00 Well, Corrina, families are in mourning today after the crash killed two young boys here

00:08 in Ashcroft in southwest Sydney.

00:10 And a memorial has been set up at the crash site behind me with locals in the community

00:14 coming to lay flowers and teddy bears in tribute of these two children.

00:20 Police are still searching for those two men who remain on the run 24 hours on from this

00:26 crash here in Ashcroft.

00:29 And the driver and the passenger of that crash fled the scene yesterday morning around 11

00:35 a.m.

00:36 And the two children who were in the back seat, aged between 10 to 15, died at the scene

00:42 after the car crashed into a power pole and a tree.

00:46 And the impact was so intense that it split the car in half.

00:51 The community are shocked and devastated this morning, and many of them are still coming

00:55 to terms with what happened here.

01:05 I'm just, I'm still in shock about it.

01:08 Two children being thrown out of a car, you know, and the other, the two, whoever they

01:14 are, young or older, have ran off.

01:17 Where's the compassion in that?

01:18 I cannot imagine this happened to my children.

01:22 I think that's the most terrible thing that happened to your children as a mother.

01:28 Alison, what else have police said?

01:31 Corrina, police have urged these two men to turn themselves into police.

01:37 Of course, this is now almost 24 hours since the crash happened, and police are still searching

01:43 for these men.

01:45 They're also looking to speak to the rider of a dirt bike that was trailing this car

01:50 at the time of the incident, and yesterday when police spoke to media, they were quite

01:55 harsh in their language.

01:56 They said that this showed a great weakness of character, the fact that the two men left

02:02 the scene and didn't take responsibility for what had happened.

02:06 And police also believe that speeding was a significant factor in this incident.

02:11 They say that the car, they believe, was traveling well above the 50-kilometer speed limit on

02:16 this road, and these deaths now bring the road death toll in New South Wales to above

02:22 300 lives lost, and they say that almost half of those incidents are related to speeding.

02:29 And the mayor of Liverpool, Ned Mamoun, has also spoken, and he says that the council

02:33 will be looking at what road safety measures they can provide to increase community safety.

02:38 This is a little bit of what he had to say.

02:41 People are going out there and saying, you know, why is this happening and what can we

02:44 do?

02:45 We've got to get answers, and it's tough.

02:47 It's really tough to go out there and say, well, how do we prevent this?

02:50 If people are going to be idiots on the roads and they're going to speed, not only do they

02:53 put themselves at risk, but they put the whole community at risk, and people just want to

02:57 know, how can we stop this?

02:58 How can we save them?

02:59 How can we help them?

03:00 That was the Liverpool mayor, Ned Mamoun, speaking, and he says that the community is

03:05 devastated and in pain, especially after another accident that happened about a kilometer away

03:12 two months ago, where a brother and sister were killed at Heckenburg.

03:16 And he says that the fact that this accident has happened again in similar circumstances

03:22 has really left the community shocked and devastated.
