Elizabeth Ploughs Her Own Course (1965)

We have another wonderful clip from from our friends at Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive. This clip is from 1965 and is courtesy of UTV © ITV.   We have another interesting clip relating to ploughing in Northern Ireland, this time we meet Elizabeth from Ballyclare who enjoys ploughing as a past-time but also competes, despite having a full-time job in an office. She says: “I love ploughing, I get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I started ploughing about two years ago and the first match that I went to was Ballyboley and I did quite well in it.” She adds: “When I was at school I had more time to plough but now that I have an office job it has become much more of a past-time. 00:47 - Yes, I love it, so do, it's great.

00:50 - Well, when did you first start playing?

00:53 - About two years ago.

00:54 The first playing match I went to was Bali Boli.

00:57 - Yes.

00:58 - And I've done quite well in it.

01:01 Now, you have a full-time job at present.

01:03 Is this playing really rather a gimmick?

01:06 - Yes, when I was at school, I had more time to play,

01:09 but now I have an office job, so just past time.

01:13 - Well, do you play at weekends and holidays?

01:16 - Yes, I do.

01:17 - You often compete against male competitors.

01:21 Do they look upon you as a joke,

01:24 or do they take it all as a serious business?

01:27 - No, I think that they think I'm a competitor

01:30 and I'm playing against them.

01:32 I say for them to do their best and I'll do mine.

01:35 - And let the best one win.

01:36 - Yes.

01:37 - Now, Elizabeth, do you hope to marry a farmer?

01:39 - Yes, if there's any farmers to marry.

01:42 - Well, he'll certainly have to mind his furrow.

01:46 Elizabeth, thank you very much.

01:48 - Thank you.
