Thunderstorms forecast for eastern Australia over Christmas

Violent thunderstorms are likely across eastern Australia this Christmas, rivalling some of the most intense and widespread storm outbreaks of the past few decades.

00:00 The action really focused in terms of thunderstorms across the eastern coast, so chance of a thunderstorm

00:07 through Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

00:09 Even Canberra seeing a possibility of a thunderstorm on Christmas Day, as well as some showers

00:14 there.

00:15 But for the other capitals, generally not too bad.

00:17 Some cloudy skies in Hobart and a southeasterly wind, temperatures about 20 degrees there

00:21 but should be a dry day.

00:23 Similar story in Adelaide, a fairly pleasant day although not particularly warm, temperatures

00:27 in the low 20s.

00:29 Generally cranking up on the western side of the country, low or mid 30s and mostly

00:32 sunny conditions for Perth and much of Western Australia.

00:36 Warm conditions across the north with heatwave warnings possible through many in northern

00:40 Australia, mid to upper 30s and just one or two seasonal showers and storms across most

00:45 northern parts of the country for Christmas Day.

00:47 We're sort of seeing it ramp up at the moment, there was some severe thunderstorms around

00:50 yesterday, still one or two severe storms across the Queensland coastline at the moment

00:56 and through the course of this afternoon, Saturday afternoon, anticipating really the

01:00 border area between Queensland and New South Wales to be the prime spot for the risk of

01:05 further severe thunderstorms as we get particularly into the warmer hours of today, the afternoon,

01:09 the evening.

01:10 Into Sunday it's going to be another day of storms across eastern areas with that region

01:14 really starting to spread out, the risk of storms into coastal spots like Sydney on Sunday

01:19 and then Monday, Christmas Day, storms all down that eastern side of the country, likely

01:24 to continue into Tuesday, we could see a continuation of storms and wet weather for many eastern

01:29 and southeastern places and then a gradual improvement and clearing to this weather from

01:34 midweek onwards.
