One of Liverpool’s longest serving political leaders has been sworn in as the city’s Lord Mayor. Cllr Richard Kemp said it was a ‘privilege’ to take up the post as he was sworn in as Liverpool’s First Citizen at the historic Town Hall this week.

00:19Liverpool, Councillor Kemp has held a number of influential roles, leading his party on the City

00:24Council for 11 years before stepping down following last year's all-out local elections.

00:29Having spent 12 months as Deputy Lord Mayor, the Penny Lane Ward member will now take on the

00:33historic robes and responsibilities. The veteran public servant was also awarded a CBE in 2011.

00:39In his own 12 months, Councillor Kemp has vowed to support care leavers across the city. The Lord

00:44Mayor is always a serving councillor, elected by the full council and stands for one year in office.

00:49They're the first citizen and chosen representative of the city, acting as the focal point of the

00:54community as well as promoting the city and forging national and international links.
