"Sweet Early Violets" is a song mentioned a few times in Vera Brittain's book Testament of Youth.
Her brother Edward heard the song while serving in the military. A gramophone in the trenches played the song, and it brought him comfort. He said as much in letters he sent home in England.
So his sister Vera seeks out the song and gets familiar with it since her brother was fond of it.
