00:00 Since 1960, the Australian of the Year Awards have celebrated and recognised Australians who inspire us.

00:07 But who becomes an Australian of the Year?

00:10 Well, that's up to you.

00:12 They may be people who bring about great change,

00:15 who give a voice to those who need to be heard,

00:18 or who humbly serve their local community.

00:21 It only takes one nomination to elevate their voice,

00:25 help them access more support,

00:27 or give them national recognition.

00:30 Anyone can nominate an Australian they admire.

00:33 So, who would you nominate?

00:35 When all the nominations are in,

00:37 selection panels made up of a diverse group of community representatives

00:41 begin the hard work of shortlisting four nominees

00:44 in each of the four categories across every state and territory.

00:49 The award recipient for each category is then announced

00:53 at prestigious state and territory events across Australia.

00:56 Those 32 recipients go on to represent their state or territory

01:00 in Canberra at the National Awards,

01:03 where, finally, four Australians of the Year are announced live on TV

01:08 the evening before Australia Day.

01:10 It takes just one nomination by any member of the public to get started.
