Euros 2024: How do football tournaments impact domestic violence?

Domestic violence during the Euros increases significantly, according to new research.

00:10around the country, we know that for the women and children we support it can be a time that's

00:15just filled with real fear.

00:18It isn't the first time the issue of domestic violence around sport has been brought to

00:21light.

00:22Back in 2022, during the World Cup in Qatar, Women's Aid ran the He's Coming Home campaign,

00:28which highlighted how existing abuse can intensify during football tournaments.

00:32Research from 2022 revealed that domestic abuse by partners can increase by around 47%

00:41on the day that England have won a World Cup match or European Championship match, so even

00:47whether they win or lose, it can significantly increase incidents of domestic abuse.

00:53And we know that quite often this will also relate to alcohol.
