00:00Then they put us in a train and we still didn't know where we were going.

00:07We arrived in Łódź and there was a big ghetto there.

00:30Working conditions.

00:32The dying is already very, very high.

00:36And had the war stopped at that point,

00:38we could have certainly said that this was a genocide.

00:43There were so many people,

00:46and so many hungry and dead and cold people.

00:50And there was nothing that anybody can do.

00:54The idea then becomes, slowly,

00:56we're going to send them somewhere else far away

00:59and let nature take care of them.

01:02And for a while, this means sending them to the island of Madagascar.

01:08Crazy though that might sound,

01:10after June, when France surrenders,

01:13this idea suddenly gains resonance.

01:15Because Madagascar, an island off the southeast coast of Africa,

01:19is a French possession.

01:21But the British don't surrender, the British keep fighting,

01:24the British control the ocean,

01:26so Madagascar as a solution quickly fades,

01:28and then, by the end of 1940,

01:31it becomes clear that the Jews are going to have to be pushed somewhere else.

01:35Now the Germans daily would go out and catch people in the street,

01:41put them in trains and send them out.

01:45And after a while, we started hearing that,

01:51that those people are not being sent to work.

01:56And, you know, nobody wanted to believe.
