Injured Ben Stokes replaced by Durham’s Matthew Potts for England

England’s injured test captain Ben Stokes has been replaced by Durham fast bowler Matthew Potts for the first match against Sri Lanka. Daniel Wales reports.

00:07first time since the summer of 2023. He will replace captain Ben Stokes in the XI thanks

00:12to Stokes picking up a hamstring injury whilst playing for the Northern Superchargers in

00:16the 100. Stokes had already played for Durham in the county championship on three occasions

00:21this summer before captaining England to a series win against the West Indies. It now

00:27remains to be seen as to when Stokes will be able to return to competitive cricket with

00:32upcoming series against Pakistan and New Zealand to come in the eventual lead up to the Ashes.

00:38Ollie Pope will take up the captaincy as England take on Sri Lanka at Old Trafford in Manchester,

00:44the first in a three game series that will see the sides also meet at Lourdes and The

00:49Oval. Following the retirements of Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad, this is an opportunity for

00:54Potts to stick his claim to be part of the next generation for England.
