00:00Talking about the new 4 album, a little bit earlier in the show we saw the first video

00:04Until You Call On The Dark, and I just want to touch on that again you guys, because first

00:10video from an album is always kind of like an opening statement of intent kind of thing,

00:15and as you said you've had problems getting the video played in the States and so on.

00:20Was there any kind of particular message in that, that Danzig hadn't compromised for this

00:24album that you were still really feeling, you know, a lot towards your hardcore fans?

00:32Hardcore?

00:33Yeah, your long time fans.

00:35Oh yeah, like you said before, we do what we do, and if people like it, great, and if they don't,

00:42they can take a hike, you know.

00:47Very polite there.

00:50And we talk a little bit more about the songwriting process as well,

00:53because you touched on that a little earlier, but with you Glenn, how does that work?

01:00Does the music inspire the lyrics, or do the lyrics inspire the music,

01:03or do you have them running parallel?

01:05There's no rule or rhyme or reason to it.

01:08Sometimes I'll have a lyric, sometimes I'll have a melody and no lyrics,

01:11sometimes I'll write the actual chord progressions, I mean, and it could be on guitar or piano,

01:16sometimes it's just the thought in my head, you know, I don't restrict myself to any one way,

01:22because if I restrict myself, then I'll be cutting off an avenue for a good idea.

01:27Absolutely, I mean, how do you then contribute,

01:30how do you then communicate these ideas to the other three guys?

01:34I can pretty much play any instrument.

01:36Yes, because you played guitar and piano on the album.

01:38Yeah, and pretty much anything, so I mean, drums, even on the old Sam Hayne record,

01:43and some of the Misfit records I play drums, I mean, it's...

01:47You can also come in and say,

01:49hum stuff to people and they'll, you know, catch up on it too, you know,

01:52if you just got it when you just got out of the car, you know, or something,

01:55you can say, oh wait, I got this, and, you know, go like that,

01:57I've seen you do that with guitar parts and stuff, you know, it's real easy.

02:02So basically, you're all on the same wavelength anyway, so they can...

02:05Well, not at first, but then...

02:07Sometimes.

02:08Sometimes we are, and sometimes it clicks.

02:10There's some songs that just really click, and they're done, like, really quick,

02:14and then there's some songs in the studio I have to go back and listen what's wrong with it,

02:18and take it apart, and put it back together,

02:20and some songs are very laborious, and some aren't, some are just really...

02:25I mean, for your part, Eerie, do you feel that you're able to stretch yourself as a musician?

02:30Well, I don't know, yeah, I think I am, but I think that basically whenever,

02:36like, especially with this record, the songs,

02:38I wasn't even... I'd sit there and just listen, see what was going on, you know,

02:42if he didn't say, hey, I want this here, I was kind of like, just play what you feel,

02:46things came out really good, you know,

02:48so I don't have to stretch that much, I just have to do what's important for this band, you know.

02:54Basically, you found a system that works for you.

02:56Yeah, well, you know, it goes back to the songwriting.

02:59A lot of people like to show off in songs, and they forget it's a band,

03:02and you're doing each person as a part, and for them it's just this ego trip

03:07to, you know, show off how good or how fast they can play their instrument.

03:11That's a load of rubbish, that's a load of bull.

03:13That's what me and him, like, we're in punk bands for, to get rid of that crap,

03:17and, you know, I've always said that, you know,

03:20all the speed metal and thrash metal bands just ripped off hardcore and put whiny vocals

03:25and leads in there, long, boring leads.

03:27I still feel that way.

03:28No, I agree with you, because some bands can get very self-indulgent,

03:31and it actually takes away from the music.

03:33If it's simple and it works, that's all you need.

03:36So, this being your fourth studio album,

03:39how, what steps do you take to keep things creatively challenging?

03:45Lots of liquor.

03:48Not that much.

03:49Oh, you're the one, okay, no, that was a joke.

03:54Change things up every now and then, have as much fun as you can, keep it light, you know.

04:01Easy, last, last album, the third album, was done, basics were done in like four or five days,

04:06but it was real casual, you know, we knew the stuff, we played it really well,

04:10got a lot of stuff on one take, it was the same with this, you know, this was even easier,

04:14you know what I mean, because a lot of the stuff is still kind of moving around,

04:17and while you're in the studio, we're playing all the parts and putting them together and stuff,

04:21and this is probably the easiest record we ever did, at least from a basic standpoint, you know.

04:27Yeah, see, he gets to go home after he does his parts,

04:30I gotta stay there and battle layers, yeah, he comes home sporadically,

04:36but he moved back east, so he wasn't living out in California anymore, and

04:44you said, get out of here, it was basically, you know, me, and then if I needed John to come in

04:48and do something, or if I could play it myself, great, but if it's a lead, I'd rather John play

04:53the leads, unless it's just me bending notes and ripping strings apart and stuff, and so

04:59for him and Chuck, it was easier, done, they never sold them again, pretty much.

05:02Yeah, I was in the mix and stuff on the last album all the time.

05:06That's true, that's true.

05:07At least for a couple hours.

05:08So you missed the best part, driving Rick crazy, that's the best part.

05:11But I didn't need that anymore, I drove Rick crazy enough, you know.

05:15And it's vice versa, Rick driving everyone else crazy, so it's funny though.

05:18I had a great time doing this record, you know.

05:21Great, I think that shows on the album as well, comes across.

05:24Okay, well, we have got lots more time to talk to Glenn, Erie, and the rest of the band,

05:28and we will be doing that a little bit later on in the show, and actually,

05:30we will be talking about Rick Rubin's role in the production of the 4 album a little bit later on.

05:37But right now, the guys have to go down to the gig,

05:40tonight's gig, in Phoenix, Arizona for their soundcheck.

05:43So we're going to let them go off down there,

05:45and we'll be joining them a little bit later on to talk some more.

05:48And taking us into our next short break,
