You know you look amazing tonight.
00:02
Thank you, so do you. You look very glamorous.
00:04
Thank you. We're trying to give glamour.
00:06
You're giving it all the way.
00:08
Second time around this year for the Emmys, which is rare.
00:10
You know, Hollywood is
00:12
bouncing back in a new way.
00:14
What are you excited to see, especially
00:16
with this year in Hollywood that
00:18
maybe we hadn't seen before?
00:20
I think it is the most diverse
00:22
Emmys list
00:24
of nominees in its history.
00:26
After 76 years,
00:28
B-Line and Black B-Line have been here forever
00:30
and not gotten our due.
00:32
I think we're starting getting closer to parody.
00:34
So I'm happy about that.
00:36
I like a little progress.
00:38
We all like a little progress.
00:40
And speaking of progress,
00:42
so many shows are making history.
00:44
So many people are literally
00:46
first-time nominees, which we also love to see.
00:48
The newbies. We love the newbies.
00:50
What shows are you rooting
00:52
for the most tonight?
00:54
Shogun.
00:56
Baby Reindeer.
00:58
The Bear.
01:00
I mean, there's so much stuff, man.
01:02
I can't even...
01:04
Can't keep up. It's impossible.
01:06
Well, tonight, obviously,
01:08
you are here with...
01:10
There's so many people that are coming right now
01:12
that I love this. But what are you
01:14
most looking forward to with this Emmys?
01:16
Other than the history that's being made
01:18
with the first-time nominees,
01:20
what are you most looking forward to tonight?
01:22
Well, Christopher Brago is a friend of mine
01:24
and he's the new chair, the first Latin chair
01:26
of the Emmys Awards.
01:28
And I'm presenting him tonight.
01:30
So I'm really looking forward to that moment.
01:32
They gave me a really beautiful spotlight moment,
01:34
so I'm going to seize it.
01:36
Do you think you'll make your friend cry?
01:38
I'm going to make a lot of people cry.
01:40
Carpe diem.
01:42
Here we go. I'm ready to see it.
01:44
So I hear you have a new project coming
01:46
that you've got to tell us about.
01:48
Yes. It's on PBS. It's called
01:50
American Historia, the Untold History of Latinos.
01:52
It took me five years to get this on air.
01:54
And it's the thing I'm most proud of.
01:56
I think this is the cultural corrective
01:58
my people have been waiting for their whole lives.
02:00
Because John Hopkins University
02:02
did a study and 87% of Latin
02:04
contributions to making of the U.S.
02:06
are not in history textbooks.
02:08
And this is the antidote to that.
02:10
That is amazing.
02:12
What is the biggest thing
02:14
that you learned during that time
02:16
on the show that you were just shocked by?
02:18
Even you as a person who's a part
02:20
of the community, a leader and a representative
02:22
of the community, what were you like?
02:24
Oh, I didn't even know that.
02:26
Well, I didn't realize
02:28
how much oppression we had experienced.
02:30
I was not aware.
02:32
After black people were the second most lynched people
02:34
in America, but we were burnt
02:36
alive, shot,
02:38
experimented on, sterilized,
02:40
segregated.
02:42
The first young
02:44
boy lynched in America
02:46
was a Latin boy, 1911,
02:48
before Edgar Mevers,
02:50
who's the second.
02:52
And he was 14 years old because he disrespected
02:54
a white man in 1911, Antonio Gomez.
02:56
So that fact was like chilling.
02:58
Wow.
03:00
Crossed out, deleted, erased.
03:02
And now we're putting it back into the world.
03:04
And when does this project come out?
03:06
September 27th on PBS at 9pm.
