00:13Quite frankly, I never thought Pete Rose would ever die.

00:16Ever.

00:17I mean, he was such a presence.

00:21He was just so important to the game of baseball for so, so many years.

00:28I was saddened, if you want to know the truth.

00:31I have a certain relationship with him.

00:35We were going to write his autobiography, and we wrote a proposal, and they offered

00:40us $350,000 for the thing.

00:45And unfortunately, at the time, he was not willing to admit that he had bet on baseball,

00:52and so he was concerned that we were going to write this thing and that he wasn't going

00:56to tell the truth.

00:57So his response was, they're not offering us enough money.

01:02And so he didn't write the book for another, say, 10 years.

01:07So he, you know, the bottom line was, if he was going to tell the real story, he wanted

01:12more money.

01:13Well, he wasn't going to tell the real story.

01:17And so he didn't really want to write a book where he wasn't telling the truth.

01:24That's the way I saw it.
