Clearly, Labour have the big problem. They went into the election, as did the Conservatives,
00:06
saying that there wouldn't be tax rises. And of course, everyone knew that that was
00:10
not possible. There were a lot of big cuts baked into the system. What we've got is the
00:15
whole aspect of, do we need further rises to keep the public services, or at least to
00:22
improve them, from the state that they're in. So obviously, we've had the budget. There
00:29
are rises in many ways. Of course, it's meant to be clever. But of course, business believe
00:34
that loading the cost onto them through the national insurance that they have to pay for
00:39
their employers, and indeed, dropping the threshold from 9,100 down to 5,000, that's
00:45
going to bring in lots of money. But certainly, from my perspective, I've heard a lot of concern
00:49
from business who say it's going to be really difficult.
00:52
The Conservative Party led for the first time by a black leader after an historic election
00:58
victory, faces challenges in addressing the country's economic crisis, rebuilding trust
01:04
amongst working class voters, and uniting a divided party base on key policy issues.
01:10
Well, we have to give credit to the Conservative Party, because yet again, they have done something
01:16
that no other party has done. Yes, it's their credit. But of course, I do get to the belief
01:24
or I am of the belief now that we shouldn't be talking about skin colour. It's policies
01:28
and what's good for the country.
01:30
The question is whether the new Conservative leader can face off the challenge from Labour,
01:35
but also from Reform UK for right-wing voters.
01:39
Well, I mean, the thing about the Conservatives, they have a very long tradition, sometimes
01:45
people regard as ignoble, of getting rid of leaders who are not up to the job. But many
01:51
people, when Thatcher became leader in 1975, didn't sort of write her sort of abilities
01:55
and as we know, people tend to sort of grow into it. We shall see.
