Melbourne local government election results announced

The results of another election have been announced today, this time, for Victoria’s local councils. Nick Reece has been re-elected as Melbourne's Lord Mayor, and he's vowing to deliver on every election pledge.

00:00Stepping out of Sally Capp's shadow, Nick Rees is now Melbourne's official Lord Mayor.

00:10It is truly the honour of my life.

00:13He walked into the count with confidence, checking his speech and delivering it.

00:18This was a hard-fought election. Make no mistake about that.

00:21No one has gone harder in this election campaign on cleanliness and safety than me.

00:27And as Lord Mayor, I'm going to be making that a reality.

00:30Rasheena Campbell will take over as Deputy.

00:32I am honoured to be the first person of Indian heritage to be the Deputy Lord Mayor of Melbourne.

00:37No prizes for second, but Roxanne Ingleton was upbeat.

00:41Thank you to everybody who voted for us. I feel like we ran a really positive campaign for the Greens.

00:45Also announced today were Melbourne City Councillors, some old and new, including former federal politician Gladys Liu.

00:52Nick Rees says he's confident he can deliver all his planned policies, including extending the free tram zone,

00:59selling the city's shares in the Regent Theatre, turning CBD offices into apartments and freezing rates for one year.

01:06After weeks of campaigning and then waiting for a result, today Nick Rees is celebrating.

01:12He'll be sworn in as Lord Mayor next week, then the hard work begins.
