Looking ahead: Snow blanketing the Upper Midwest and Northeast

AccuWeather's Joe Lundberg looks ahead to the first week of December. Rounds of snowfall are forecast to blanket the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions of the United States.

00:00We head to the one and only Accuweather long-range expert, Joe Lundberg, who

00:04has certainly got a lot to say this week. But first, before we get there, Joe,

00:08we want to take a listen to last week. All right.

00:12Waves of cold will be coming into the northern plains and then spreading south and east all

00:16the way to the northeast as we go through the week of Thanksgiving and beyond. It'll dry out

00:21along the West Coast after this weekend and Thanksgiving Day. Yeah, we're going to be

00:24talking about a storm system across parts of the country. All right. Seems pretty spot on to me. We

00:30talked about that storm producing rain and snow and kind of a messy thing. What do we have on tap

00:35as we look ahead to December? The calendar's already there, Joe. Well, one of the things

00:39that we're going to talk about for next week is the same as last week. It's this one, the waves

00:44of cold. They're going to be coming from the northern plains to the east once again, and this

00:48will probably last into the second week of December before finally maybe easing more rounds of snow

00:53from the upper midwest to the northeast. We'll be keeping on a clipper system middle of the week,

00:57dry and warm in the west, though temperatures above normal pretty much everywhere from the

01:01western plains to the west coast for much of the week ahead. In fact, the reason why is this

01:06upper level ridge of high pressure that builds over the western states down on the eastern side

01:11of it. You're going to see these waves of cold. The worst of it's probably early in the week

01:14in the southeast, although it may get a little chilly there at the end of the week and next

01:18weekend. But as these disturbances come through the Great Lakes, you're going to see the lake

01:22effect snow ongoing through the weekend and into early next week. And then there's a clipper that

01:26comes through Tuesday night, Wednesday and Wednesday night, and that's going to produce a swath of snow

01:30from parts of northern Minnesota through Michigan and perhaps parts of the northeast as well.

01:35Maybe not a big event, but you know it's for everybody, not just for the lake effect band.

01:40So that's some of the things that we're going to be keeping a close eye on for the middle of next

01:43week. A lot of the ski resorts very happy about that, but that clipper system is going to kind

01:48of throw a wrench in things too. It really does. If you look at the temperature forecast for next

01:53week, this is Sunday and you can see the cold is well entrenched across the east. The system

01:57comes off the eastern seaboard Sunday and then the cold just continues to pile in behind it.

02:01Like I said, the worst of it's probably Monday night when you can get down to freezing in the

02:05I-10 corridor. Then it starts to ease up, but there's that clipper system in here. As it works

02:10its way like this, guess what? You're going to see another wave of cold air come crashing in behind

02:14it and it's going to be brutal at the end of next week and next weekend across the northeast

02:18and mid-Atlantic. I'm not sure if my winter coat is fully broken in yet, but if there's one thing

02:23people need to know, what is it? Well, it's probably going to be a relaxing of the cold, but that's

02:29going to come after this little thing. As we get to around the 9th, 10th, 11th of December, the upper

02:35level trough axis goes off the west coast. The ridge axis, I should say. The trough shifts west.

02:41That allows this system to try and develop. It's still not certain as to whether or not it can come

02:45up the eastern seaboard and be pushed out to sea. If it goes this way with all the cold air in place,

02:49you could be talking about a snowstorm. Then the one thing to know beyond that, after all this cold,

02:54the pattern will flatten and this cold will be retreating for the second half of December.
