Netherlands begins implementation of additional border controls

The Netherlands is reintroducing temporary controls on its borders, set to last six months.

00:00The Netherlands began implementing renewed additional border controls on Monday.

00:08The tightened border checks are set to last six months across roads, railways and a select

00:13number of flights.

00:14The measures were proposed by the right-wing coalition led by the well-known anti-Muslim

00:19nationalist PVV party of Geert Wilders.

00:23Despite criticism, the Dutch Minister of Asylum and Migration said the move is not just symbolic

00:28and expects it will succeed in bringing down the influx of illegal migrants.

00:32There are always people who have a reason not to do something, but I won't let them

00:36do it.

00:37We are taking these measures because I want this influx to go down and this is one of

00:42the measures to make that happen.

00:45The Dutch military police carrying out the checks said most people will not notice a

00:50huge difference at borders.

00:52While they are now technically able to carry out checks at all border crossing points,

00:56this is unlikely to happen as they must operate at the same capacity as before.
