What are your chances of seeing a white Christmas?

AccuWeather's Damien Lodes breaks down the odds of each part of the country seeing a white Christmas.

00:00Have you been wondering, are we going to see a white Christmas?

00:02Well, if you're in one of these five cities, the chances are looking pretty good.

00:06Minneapolis, Denver and Milwaukee make up our top three cities

00:09that have the highest percentage chance of seeing a white Christmas.

00:12White Christmas, by the way, means seeing at least one inch of snowfall

00:15on the ground Christmas Day.

00:17Detroit and Buffalo, that round up our top five cities here.

00:20But as far as the overall likelihood of how much of a white Christmas

00:24we have seen here recently,

00:25this is the percentage of coverage here across the United States

00:28of at least an inch of total snowfall.

00:31And you can see that since 2018, we've actually been below normal,

00:34except for that record there, 2022 at over 53 percent of the U.S.

00:39there with snowfall on the ground.

00:40But here's the map.

00:42Pretty much the way it works out, the farther north you go

00:44or the higher elevation you go, the higher your percentage will be

00:47to see a white Christmas.

00:48Now, across the northeast, northern New York, anywhere along the Great Lakes,

00:51that's where we're going to see really great chances there,

00:53especially the higher elevations there across the Appalachians.

00:56But across the northern plains.

00:58Yes, once again, the farther north you go, the higher the chance will be

01:01that you will get a chance to see a white Christmas across the northwest.

01:04If you're along the coast, your chances are smaller.

01:07However, if you're on the interior or in higher elevations, chances

01:10are pretty good that you will see a white Christmas.

01:13In fact, the highest snowfall total ever on Christmas Day was 44 inches

01:18at Mount Rainier in Washington state.

01:20So that is definitely a white Christmas across the southwest.

01:23Pretty much the Rockies is going to be your best bet for total snowfall

01:27across the southern plains.

01:28Pretty much the farther north you go, the higher the chance you will get.

01:31And the highest or the only record snowfall ever for either Christmas Eve

01:35or Christmas Day was that Christmas Eve blizzard back in 2009 in Oklahoma City.

01:40And then, yes, across the southeast, everywhere sees a decent chance,

01:44except for Florida.
