Look ahead: Bitter cold for Northern US; Snow and ice in Southeast

AccuWeather's Long-Range Expert Joe Lundberg warns of bitterly cold air extending from the Plains to the eastern half of the United States. The Southeast could face the threat of snow and ice.

00:00The crystal ball meteorologist Joe Lumber. Joe, let's get right into it.

00:03We have a very busy weather pattern next week. What do we need to be ready for?

00:07One of the things that you like to say, Bernie, the pattern is loaded. It's loaded for bear

00:12because there's a lot going on right now. And the events that are unfolding today

00:16and this weekend and early next week really set the table for what's to come for all of next week.

00:20Waves of cold from the plains to the east. That's just a lock. And we've been talking

00:24about this for the past couple of weeks. There will be travel disruptions behind the storm system

00:29Sunday into Monday that may linger for an extra day or two. So be prepared for that.

00:33And there's still a threat for snow and ice in parts of the southeast, particularly

00:36late next week. There may be a sneaky little system on Wednesday,

00:39but I think Friday and Saturday is a bigger concern over a bigger area.

00:43You know, Joe, you and the long range department talked about this. You know,

00:47we're not looking at record cold. It's just the prolonged nature of it,

00:51especially from the Dakotas in the parts of the Midwest.

00:55Yeah, the source regions are not terribly cold right now. You're just manufacturing it with it.

01:00And you're starting to lay snow down and more and more places in here.

01:03So as these air masses keep coming down, it just gets progressively cold. And it's the coldest

01:08air that we've seen so far this season. And there will be prolonged high heating demand across the

01:13entire eastern half of the country. That includes areas down into Texas and also into the southeast,

01:18even into northern Florida. There will be multiple days of subzero in these places

01:22with this pattern unfolding over the next 10 days.

01:26You know, you talk about waves of cold, Joe. This map that you and I showed last Friday hasn't

01:30changed. Here it comes. Storm leaving the mid-Atlantic on Wednesday, cold on Monday.

01:36Here comes the first shot of cold.

01:38Yeah, it's already cold. It's going to get colder. And you can see that by the time we

01:42get to Wednesday, behind the first storm system, everybody from the northeast all the way back to

01:47the Midwest is going to be really, really feeling this. Sub freezing temperature will get down

01:52into Texas and even a depart to the southeast. And there's snow and ice threats, you know,

01:57that next system coming out of the western Gulf of Mexico. In fact,

02:00there you can see the seeds of it. The jet stream gets suppressed to the south.

02:04The question is going to be, will the storm system try to work its way northeastward?

02:08And there's some reasons why that could happen. Or will it get suppressed out to the south?

02:12And there's little to no snow with it. Regardless, brutally cold is a factor in both of these,

02:17because that moves out and more cold air comes in behind it.

02:20And Joe, I know you and the Long Range Department are worried that the storm threats keep coming.

02:24We're always looking at trouble, Bernie, down the road. It looks like another system sometime

02:28between the 13th and the 15th. Similar track, maybe a bit farther north. With all the cold

02:33air in place, you've got to worry about snow and ice threats from maybe Boston and New York City

02:37all the way to Little Rock and some rain and thunderstorms in the southeast.
