Andy Hutchinson explores the Mabgate area of Leeds.

00:00Hi and welcome to Leeds then and today with me Andrew Hutchinson. Guess where we are?
00:04A forgotten area of the city. This is Mabgate. Mab meaning prostitute and gate
00:10meaning street.
00:17Despite having a salubrious past the area then and today boasts a number of
00:22businesses. It also has links to the city's rich textile heritage.
00:34Not many people really are aware of Mabgate and in many ways this mural
00:40captures the essence of the community. It shows the people who choose Mabgate to
00:47work rest and play.
00:52This is Hope Foundry, a grade 2 listed building which has been part of the
00:56city's rich heritage since 1812. It still boasts striking features which remain
01:01mesmerizing. The Black Horse served up a warm welcome for generations of drinkers.
01:09Sadly it's another example of a loved and lost city pub.
01:17So this is the city of Mabgate Inn at the corner of Bell Street and Mabgate
01:21which dates back to the 1840s. It boasts on its exterior tiles which are an
01:27example of Bermantos pottery which at one stage were exported around the world.
01:39I've lived in Leeds all my life and this is the first time I've ever been to
01:43Mabgate. There are signs like in all corners of the city of dilapidation but
01:49there are also signs of optimism and hope for this area and as you can hear
01:54Mabgate is being transformed and building for the future.
