Twin Peaks and 'Muholland Drive' director David Lynch dies aged 78

The maverick US director was well-known for his dark, surrealistic artistic visions and his successful mainstream career.

00:00The Maverick U.S. film director, writer and producer David Lynch has died at the age of

00:0778. His family announced his death on Facebook, writing, there is a big hole in the world

00:12now that he is no longer with us. In 2024, Lynch revealed he had been diagnosed with

00:18emphysema and wouldn't be able to leave his house to direct any longer. He leaves behind

00:24a celebrated body of work that melded elements of horror, film noir and classical European

00:29surrealism. Lynch, who originally studied painting, made his mark on the film industry

00:35in the 1970s with the surreal Eraserhead. His wide-ranging body of work spanned from

00:41the neo-noir Mulholland Drive to the eclectic Twin Peaks. Other famous work included the

00:47crime drama Wild at Heart, which won the Palm Door at the Cannes Film Festival, and the

00:51biographical The Elephant Man. He was nominated for an Oscar four times over the course of

00:57his career, eventually receiving an honorary Oscar for lifetime achievement in 2019. Lynch's

01:04last major project was 2017's Twin Peaks, The Return, which continued the TV series,

01:10which ran for two seasons in the early 1990s. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
