As Holocaust is commemorated, Jewish groups warn of rising antisemitism

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, on January 27, people remember the six million Jews and millions of other victims of Nazi persecution during WWII.

00:00This Monday is Holocaust Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the millions of Jews and other minorities that were murdered by the Nazis.

00:08But has much changed in Germany over the past 80 years?

00:12Anti-Semitism Commissioner in Berlin, Sigmund Königsberg, says that hatred against Jews is a chameleon

00:19and he doesn't feel as safe in Germany as he did 20 years ago.

00:23There are no more Jewish events, not even a Jewish puppet theatre for children that is not protected by the police.

00:32We are attacked by the friends of Hamas.

00:38We are attacked from the extreme left by so-called anti-Japanese.

00:44We are attacked by Islamists.

00:46We are attacked by the extreme right.

00:49Jewish groups that are usually hostile and fight against each other,

00:55find themselves together in anti-Semitism.

00:58This is here and in a vehemence and in an expression that we have not yet experienced.

01:04This is the reality and it has reached a point where it becomes very difficult.

01:12There are people who have shown themselves to be openly Jewish a few years ago.

01:18They don't do that anymore.

01:20A recent study by the Anti-Defamation League shows that 1 in 12 adults in Germany

01:25and 46% of adults worldwide hold significant anti-Semitic views.

01:30This also proves the dangers of social media,

01:35because they give things in short, simple spotlights, simple buzzwords

01:41and few deep-seated analyses and answers.

01:46Königsberg says that anti-Semitism increased during the pandemic

01:50and reached record highs following the October 7th attack.

01:54The bad can happen if the good do not get up and stand against it and prevent it.

02:01This is the point.

02:04And if you let it happen, it becomes stronger.

02:09If people don't get any limits, they feel strengthened and carry on.
