Park Square Roundabout is reopen today (February 12) following a major incident that saw the busy interchange shut for over 24 hours, bringing Sheffield to a standstill. Police are still at The Gateway flat block, where they have been negotiating with a man who claimed he had weapons and explosives.
00:00Good morning Sheffield. It's Alistair from the Sheffield Star. I'm speaking to you on a very wet and quite cold Wednesday where I'm sure you can hear there's quite a lot of traffic going on behind me.
00:12That's because I'm on Park Square roundabout which is open again after the major incident on February 11th.
00:19For anyone who missed it, and it's really busy once again, February 10th at around 7pm this entire roundabout, which is one of the busiest ones in the city,
00:28was closed to all traffic, all pedestrians, all trams. A major shutdown in the city. It kind of brought the entire city to a standstill.
00:37No other word for it really. It really did disrupt the day.
00:40At 7pm yesterday the closure was still in place and the city went through two rush hours with that in place.
00:47But last evening South Yorkshire Police put out a statement saying that most of the closures were lifted and that they were continuing negotiations with the man in the building behind us as I understand it.
00:59We're waiting for an update today to see if that's come to a close overnight but that was the last update we had as of around 10pm yesterday.
01:06I'm yet to see any other closures in the meantime to be fair. I've gone for a small walk around and I can't see any streets that are cordoned off at this time.
01:15I'm not sure what the status is of people being back in Ponds Forge or in the Gateway. Of course, quite a lot of people had to be housed overnight on February 10th into 11th because of the incident,
01:26which was over a man supposedly claiming he had weapons and explosives in the building behind us.
01:31Again, we're speaking to South Yorkshire Police to see if that incident has come to an end or not and if people have returned to their homes.
01:38We'll be able to bring you more information about this as the day goes on but in the meantime parks square roundabout is back open, traffic's moving normally.
01:44It looks like there'll be much less disruption today other than the usual kinds and we'll tell you more as it happens.
