Parking fines set to increase in London

The mayor has signed off on proposals to increase parking fines in the capital

00:00Parking penalties across London are expected to rise by £30. This means

00:06higher level charges in so-called band A areas, so that's central London, will

00:13increase to £160 and in outer areas of the city up to £140. City Hall has

00:19confirmed a 50% discount for those who pay earlier will remain in place. In a

00:25consultation on the proposals, 50% of people responded saying dangerous and

00:31inconsiderate parking, especially a pavement parking, highlighted was the

00:37biggest issue, which is of course pavement parking illegal in London.

00:40However, nearly half of the 1,600 respondents did not want PCNs to be

00:45increased, with the financial burden cited as the main reason. In the request

00:51from London councils to raise parking fines, they mentioned an increased cost

00:58of enforcement. We understand there has been perhaps unsurprisingly backlash to

01:05the proposals. Matt Jaffa from the Federation of Small Businesses criticised

01:12the move, arguing that small firms can ill afford these extra costs, while

01:18Caroline Russell, who is the Green Party member of the London Assembly

01:24Transport Committee, said the rise would bring the capital's borrower's fines in

01:30line with Transport for London's roads. She said it's all about making sure that

01:36people don't park in a way that introduces danger onto our roads.
