Lady Gaga on how she prepared for her role in the "House of Gucci"

In “House of Gucci,” she portrays a woman who ordered a hit on her ex-husband. In real life, she refused to meet her.  Lady Gaga tells Brut how she prepared for the role.

00:28My performance, I believe, is a performance given by someone

00:32that investigated this murder on their own,

00:35investigated the family business.

00:37I know so many secrets about Gucci that I'll never tell.

00:40I worked on a backstory for Patrizia

00:43where I delved into her life as well as the life of the Gucci's,

00:47and I read that backstory all the time.

00:51So it was like putting information into my body

00:54and building that inner life, building the fabric,

00:57the soul, the cells of the character.

00:59This was my primary source of creating who she was,

01:04meaning from reality and not from opinions.

01:07I didn't want anybody's opinion.

01:09I wanted to rely on myself and trust myself as an actress

01:15to do the work and to become.

01:18♪♪

01:21We did not use my real hair for filming,

01:24but I dyed my own hair anyway because I really was having trouble

01:28having the accent without the hair

01:31because it just felt inauthentic to being Italian.

01:35There was a real sense of authenticity

01:38that I was trying to grab onto

01:40with every cell in my body for this character.

01:50I don't consider myself to be a particularly ethical person,

01:54but I am fair.

01:56I really wanted to get the accent into my body,

01:59and just to explain, to be more specific,

02:02I first started to talk in my accent

02:04like I'm talking to you right now,

02:06meaning I talked as myself

02:08so that I could get used to using the words

02:10and not having it be something that was using me

02:13so that the real me could come through when I was speaking.

02:24I decided not to meet her

02:26because the impression that I got from watching her interviews

02:30was that she enjoyed being famous,

02:33and I found that there seemed to be an agenda and a strategy

02:39that she was trying to get you to see her.

02:42I'm sure you understand as a writer and a journalist, right,

02:46that sometimes you'll be talking to someone

02:48and it's very clear that they want you to see them

02:51in a particular way.

02:52This is Patrizia.

02:53Patrizia's trying to get you to see her a certain way,

02:56and I didn't want her to try to get me

02:58to portray her in the way she wanted.

03:01I wanted to portray the truth.
