Trump optimistic about trade talks with India, calls PM Modi a smart man

US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about India-US trade talks, describing PM Modi as 'a very smart man and a great friend'. India is considering reducing tariffs on US farm imports like almonds and cranberries. A US delegation is currently in India for trade discussions. Trump stated, "I think it's going to work out very well between India and our country. Very, very well."

00:30These remarks are pretty significant because Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the

00:34high tariffs that are charged by India and other countries on American goods.

00:43Prime Minister Modi was here just recently and we've always been very good friends.

00:49India is one of the highest tariffing nations in the world.

01:31India and over the past two days trade talks have been taking place between India and the

01:39In fact unlike China and Canada and in fact the European Union too, India is actively

01:44seeking to appease the Trump administration and they are also open up to cutting tariffs

01:48on half of US imports.

01:54We just heard the US President Donald Trump who said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi

01:58is a good friend of his and also said that in times to come we will see the trade increasing

02:04between India and the United States of America.

02:07There is a delegation from the US that at the moment is in India.

02:14The trade talks have been going on over the past 48 hours.

02:22Shivani, we are seeing the trade talks taking place and from what we understand India is

02:26also open to reducing the tariffs with regards to many of the products which are coming in

02:32as imports from the United States of America.

02:34Aishwarya, we have heard a lot of statements from Dr. S.J.

02:39Shankar himself and he has been saying that India is working together with United States

02:45for fresh trade agreements and for that the team from United States is already in India

02:50and we have also heard how US President Trump has been appreciating India over US and India

02:56tariff talks.

02:57He has appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he said that Prime Minister was in

03:02US and we are good friends.

03:04So India and United States are working together and as we see that on 2nd of April there will

03:09be fresh tariffs that will be announced by President Donald Trump and he is actually

03:15announcing big tariffs on many countries and India is also among those countries and India

03:21is working to reduce certain tariffs in order to improve the trade agreements with United

03:26States.
