00:00A dramatic night to begin this year's Champions League quarterfinals including at the Emirates
00:09where Arsenal's quest for European glory face the biggest possible test in the reigning champions
00:15and 15-time winners Real Madrid. Could Mikel Arteta's side claim a crucial advantage in the
00:22first leg? Commentary from Andy Townsend and Steve Wilson.
00:30Here's Jude Bellingham, that's a lovely ball, this is dangerous. Mbappe! David Ryan makes a save
00:43which is crucial and maybe a bit more comfortable than he might have expected.
00:48Yeah, I agree Steve. Fabulous play from Jude Bellingham. I thought Mbappe was going to do more with that.
00:55Nobody is going to get anywhere near him as fast as William Saliba is.
01:00He's not going to catch him.
01:05Louis Skelly thought there might be a gap, he still thinks there might be a gap.
01:10Part 8 for Timber.
01:13Rice in the middle, great save and Martinelli's follow-up is saved too.
01:18Timber Courtois with a double save of the highest order.
01:21Brilliant stop. The first one from the Declan Rice header is outstanding.
01:26Second one, tight angle for Martinelli. Still expect him to make that save, but brilliant work from Thibaut Courtois there.
01:34Saka, David Alibut in front of him. Saka drifting inside.
01:46Alibut has caught it in the end and it's a free kick to Arsenal.
01:50Again, no surprises when Bukayo Saka gets it immediately.
01:59He wants to work, David Alibut.
02:02It's that hand on the shoulder and a little shove and a little bit too much there.
02:07Bukayo Saka going down right in front of the referee.
02:09Only three in the wall, Rice goes round it.
02:19That is absolutely brilliant.
02:24Declan Rice breaks the deadlock with a fabulous free kick.
02:27Arsenal lead Real Madrid by a goal to nil and it is a wonderful goal.
02:38Oh, what a hit.
02:40I said it's got to be something special to beat Courtois from there.
02:45And that's exactly what Declan Rice has just served up. That was special.
02:49Kivio.
02:57Nicely done. Lewis Skelly.
03:00And still. And Martinelli.
03:03And surely what a save.
03:05Mourinho denied it. And again, unbelievable.
03:07Wow. Incredible goalkeeping by Thibaut Courtois.
03:12You won't see too many better saves than these.
03:16Astonishing work again from the goalkeeper.
03:18Oh, it's outstanding football.
03:29Saka wriggling through.
03:31Free kick is given.
03:34Great play, Bukayo Saka.
03:36Just resisting the challenge from Jude Bellingham.
03:39Four in the wall again. Two red and white shirts on the end of it.
03:48Who's it going to be?
03:50Who's it going to be?
03:52Rice or Odegaard?
03:54It's Rice again.
03:55Oh, my goodness.
04:03Incredible.
04:05This is Declan Rice's night.
04:09Arsenal two.
04:11Real Madrid nil.
04:13Two unbelievable free kicks from Declan Rice.
04:19And Arsenal now are in the quarter-final box seat because they lead by two.
04:26Van Trossard.
04:35Van Trossard.
04:38Louis Skelly.
04:39It's three! It's Mikel Moreno!
04:47Arsenal have scored three times in 17 minutes against Real Madrid.
04:56They are in dreamland here.
05:04What a brilliant finish this one is too.
05:07Real Madrid are absolutely shell-shocked.
05:11They're stunned, they haven't gotten near Arsenal for the best part of 20 minutes.
05:17That is another beautifully controlled strike.
05:30Leandro Trossard has been fouled.
05:32And Camavinga has got a second yellow card and Real Madrid's misery is more or less complete because he is sent off.
05:43Well, what a night for the Gunners. Arsenal now the big favourites to reach the semi-finals.
05:54Joe, that's the sort of result Mikel Arteta and Arsenal fans could have already have dreamt of.
05:59I mean, they would have dreamt of it, but the way that Arsenal have been playing in recent weeks, I don't think any one of us would have expected it.
06:06But what, I mean, we were catching bits of the game when we were watching, but what a performance.
06:11You know, and the two free kicks, Declan Rice, superb.
06:15We're trying to work out, was the wall at fault for maybe the first one?
06:18It was in the wrong position. Declan still got to see it and execute the technique.
06:23But the second one is as good a free kick you'll see. And that has really opened up the Champions League now.
06:29And I said, the way Arsenal play, because they jump off them a bit like into Milan, you know, Real Madrid couldn't really get into the game.
06:40You know, Arsenal can block in lines and then they were breaking. Arsenal can play humble under Arteta and that's what they've done tonight.
06:47This game ain't finished though. That's the thing with Real Madrid, is it?
06:50You just know they'll turn up. But what a performance by Arsenal.
06:52Brilliant. I mean, more possession, Arsenal, more shots and set pieces, obviously.
06:58I mean, the set piece coach gets a lot of love. Let's give Declan Rice a lot of love.
07:02I mean, I don't know why he turns us into David Beckett. I mean, these two free kicks are...
07:07The beds on this surround the wall.
07:09Liz, this is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
07:11And look at that one there. You see, if you look at their, from a ball's perspective, they need to be at least a yard over to the left.
07:19Because then Declan won't even try that. He's chose that selection because of how badly positioned the wall were, in my opinion.
07:25Yeah.
07:25And he can put as much pace on it as he wants because he doesn't have to get it to come down because he's going to the side of the wall.
07:31So I think that's an issue with a wall, but taking nothing away from Declan Rice. What a finish.
07:35But how good is the second one?
07:38I mean, Linz, the second one is, when you see it, you think, no, no way. It's too perfect.
07:45It's pinpoint.
07:47Again, this is against one of the best goalkeepers in the world. And to be fair, it's the keeper's corner.
07:51But even if he had his double in the corner, he wouldn't have saved it because...
07:56I mean, that is... You dream of that, Linz, against Real Madrid.
08:00Look at the wall there. Everyone thinks he's going left. Whips it into the top right.
08:03It is so... Look at this angle, Linz. It is so inch-perfect into the corner.
08:08Yeah.
08:08And this... He doesn't get anywhere near that. It's impossible to save.
08:12What amazing timing from Declan to do it in such a big moment. Absolute brilliance. Really was.
08:18Do you think that's something he's been working on leading up to this game?
08:22Because we know how much they work on the set pieces. They try to spot weaknesses through Nicolas Jova.
08:28Do you think he's seen something in Real Madrid and maybe known that that's in Declan's locker?
08:34No. No. I think that Declan... Been practising it.
08:37They've probably... They've got a lot of players who could probably step up and take it.
08:41Declan's got a lovely consistency with his technique from set pieces, which is...
08:46You've taken him. But we've not seen that from him before.
08:50I mean, I'm a big fan. I'm a massive fan of Declan Rice.
08:54And I didn't know he had that in his locker.
08:56You know, now that has changed the game, right?
08:57You know, because I'm thinking, if he's done that twice in the quarter-finals
09:00and he's got that ability, he's certainly got a shout to be on them in the next few weeks for Arsenal.
09:05But what a... Both of them, unbelievable strikes.
09:08Third goal wasn't too bad either, was it?
09:10Oh, and from Mikel Moreno.
09:11Just how well has he stepped up as a makeshift striker for them?
09:16Amazing. The finish is...
09:18I mean, Dennis Beckham, Thierry Henry, Marco Marzini, right?
09:21All of them will be gone. They'd be proud of that.
09:23The finish is amazing.
09:25I think even the football is really good.
09:27But I think Moreno drops off and he gets into a pocket where he has a picture of what he wants.
09:32This is lovely. It really is. The patience of it.
09:35Trosser back to Lewis Skelly.
09:36Watch him there, just sit back into that pocket.
09:38He shouldn't score from there against a keeper of this quality.
09:41But he passes it round the defender, into the corner.
09:45Honestly, I think there was another angle from behind.
09:48It is so perfect, the finish.
09:51It's almost as good as Dex Free Kicks.
09:54I mean, what a result. 3-0.
09:55And no Gabriel, no Kai Havertz. Remarkable.
10:00How big was it to have Bakayo Saka back for them, do you think?
10:03Massive. Massive. Not just...
10:04Listen, he won't have been at his fittest.
10:07You know, he can't be able to be in that long out.
10:09But sometimes he's got that presence, Saka.
10:11You know, you know by his name being on the team sheet, straight away he puts Real Madrid a little bit on notice.
10:17You know, Alaba played in that left-back position tonight, so he wouldn't want to be playing against Bakayo Saka.
10:22The crowd, more importantly, you know, they needed something to believe on.
10:25When your talisman comes back for a big game like this, you know, that lifted the crowd.
10:29The teammates, he's a senior player now.
10:32He knows that.
10:32So the whole...
10:33It would have been a risk for Arteta, but it's a risk that's paid off.
10:38I think now you wrap him in cotton wool for the next leg.
10:41You don't play him at the weekend and you get him ready for the second leg.
10:45Because let me tell you, they're going to have to drop off at the Bernabeu.
10:48And they're going to need him to be able to drive them up the pitch there.
10:51Because, listen, it's 3-0.
10:53Any other team in European football, I'd probably say, can start thinking about, you know, the semi-final.
10:58But not Real Madrid and not the Bernabeu.
11:01And so I still, I think he's massively important for them next week.
11:04They haven't overturned a 3-0 deficit, though, in the Champions League era.
11:09They have done it twice before in history, but a long, long time ago, not in the Champions League era.
11:14So it really is a massive result for Arsenal.
11:17And we're going to have more reaction to that game.
11:20Also, our feature game here with tonight's other quarterfinal between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan.
11:27And Simone Inzaghi's side have dealt Bayern a massive blow in their hopes of reaching the final at their home stadium.
11:43Here's Turam in the centre, sending it back for Martinez.
11:47And Inter have stolen the lead.
11:50It's their first attempt on target in the game.
11:54Lima keeps it alive.
11:55Kane wants it stepped back into the middle.
11:57He's smuggling.
11:59Of course, it's Thomas Muller.
12:02In the week where the spotlight shines on his future.
12:06Here is Augusto.
12:07Big chance at the end.
12:08And he's smuggled in again.
12:10Inter ending Bayern's 22-game unbeaten run at home in the Champions League to win 2-1 in the first leg.
12:29And it's a very healthy advantage to take back to San Siro, where Inter are formidable.
12:34I mean, how did they get the better of Bayern tonight?
12:38Remarkably.
12:39They're from two goal-kicks or the goalkeeper's in possession.
12:42Jan Sommer, which is going to run it here.
12:44Jan Sommer's on the ball there.
12:47Just highlights him.
12:48And I'm going to run it real slow.
12:49Because his plan is, can we get it in to the striker?
12:54And that's Lautaro Martinez there.
12:58And Teram.
12:59But watch, I'm just going to run this a little bit slower.
13:04That little flick there.
13:05And he's already made his might-up lens.
13:07I'm going to get in there.
13:08Why?
13:08Because he's going to get a little set.
13:11And once he's got the little set there, he knows exactly.
13:14This is all from the manager.
13:15We're going to get it wide.
13:16So we're going to get it wide to Bastoni and then Augusto.
13:22But watch what's the most important thing that happens in this.
13:27It's Teram.
13:29He's there.
13:30And Kim, he's behind Kim probably by five yards.
13:33He's going to run this really slow.
13:35It gets to a point where the ball doesn't even get to Augusto.
13:39He recognised it now.
13:41And look at him, Teram.
13:42He's off.
13:42He knows.
13:43Donnie Joe.
13:43Yeah, he knows there that that ball's going wide.
13:46I need to get in front of Kim.
13:48And he's in behind Kim.
13:49And watch this.
13:49Watch how quick he gets there.
13:50He's in front of him.
13:51And once he's there, he's in.
13:54And the most remarkable part of this goal, Lindsay, is this touch.
13:58That's set.
14:00And the finish are absolutely exquisite.
14:02But the whole build-up from the goalkeeper was remarkable.
14:06So this is the same goal, but from a wider angle.
14:10So if we look at it here, that's Martinez there, and that's Teram.
14:15That's the decisive players.
14:16But look, this is Damian.
14:18That's Augusto.
14:19And they're just trying to work, Lindsay, to get to this space where they win that header.
14:25And I'm going to run it on a little bit quicker.
14:27But look, Damian comes away, and they're thinking, right, we don't want to get there too soon.
14:31So they wait, get into that spot.
14:32Now.
14:33Now's the moment.
14:34Flick, touch, wide, and we're in.
14:39I mean, that is...
14:41It's devastating.
14:42It's brilliant.
14:42It just really is brilliant.
14:43I think for a coach and for players, for this to come off in a game of this magnitude, Lindsay, it's just...
14:49It's class.
14:49It really is.
14:50Against a brilliant team in Bayern Munich.
14:52They are so well-drilled, aren't they?
14:54They are.
14:55They are.
14:56What he does, we ain't got time to do it now, but what he does, really interesting,
15:01when he builds up, the centre-halves vacate, and all of the midfielders come back.
15:05So it sounds ridiculous, but he's sort of getting his...
15:08It's his simplicity, really.
15:10He's getting his best players on the ball in the build-up.
15:12And the centre-backs go into midfield?
15:13The centre-backs go into midfield.
15:14They must get through a lot of running, you know, for the centre-backs, because they're
15:17constantly getting out of the way.
15:18So they do that, and then when they're so comfortable going off the ball, aren't they?
15:23When they're in that low block, like, you know some teams do a low block, and you're
15:26like, they're just not comfortable.
15:27You can feel the nervousness, but the centre-backs are probably happy to do as much running as
15:33they can when they're trying to build up, because they know, in return, when they're
15:37under pressure and they're dropped in nice and tight, the midfielders are then going
15:41to, you know, they're going to be doing the work in front of them to keep them nice and
15:44safe.
15:44So, so well-drilled.
15:46Simone Inzaghi's, you know, arguably one of the hottest managers in the world right
15:51now.
15:52They're going to win Serie A again.
15:53You would imagine they're in a pole position for that.
15:55And you just, you can't write them out for this competition.
15:58I think they're a better, they're the, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan are the two best sides
16:03on this side of the draw.
16:05So, with that in mind, I think if Bayern, if Inter Milan go through, I think they'll
16:09be the ones going to the final.
16:11Barca might have something to say about that.
16:12I don't think Barca will have enough to beat this Inter Milan team.
16:15Okay, interesting.
16:16Well, the second goal came from the goalkeeper as well, didn't it?
16:20Crazy.
16:20It really is.
16:21I mean, Thomas Muller just got one back.
16:23It's 1-1.
16:24And again, a lot of this is player recognition.
16:26Obviously, we've got, again, we've got Jan Sommer.
16:29He's got the ball there.
16:30I'm going to run this really slow.
16:33Because if you just see it there, I think it's Pirela.
16:40He realises, I'm going to get on the ball here.
16:43They're just getting behind.
16:44And it's brilliant.
16:48It really is.
16:49And once he gets into this little pocket of space there, right, we're going to get into
16:54there, and then we're going to attack.
16:56Look how quick this goes.
16:57Touch, turn, get it wide, and you get a cross in.
17:03I mean, from the goalkeeper, we're talking against, you know, one of the best teams in
17:10the world in Bayern Munich, and they worked it.
17:12Obviously, from the goalkeeper, they have set plays, depending on what the defenders do,
17:16depending on what Bayern did.
17:17But the players executed that from the manager exceptionally well.
17:21It was, honestly, it was an exceptional performance away from home.
17:23And that was just over three minutes after Thomas Muller got the equaliser.
17:27So it was some reaction, because at that point, it really felt like it was going to be his
17:31night, of course, in the same week after his announcement that he was leaving the club.
17:36Yeah, I mean, listen, and then this is what he does.
17:38You can copy and paste this for about 100 other goals from his Pirela, finding it in the far
17:42post.
17:43He's got that natural instinct.
17:44And, you know, I think Vincent Kompany would have really deliberated on whether to play
17:49him tonight.
17:49But he knows he can do this off the bench, don't he?
17:52You think he'll play in the second one, Joe?
17:53I think he'll play.
17:54I think he will.
17:54I think he'll play, because I think, I know it's not the most vintage Thomas Muller goal,
18:00but you're going to need to go to the San Siro.
18:05And I think they're going to have to take the lead at the San Siro.
18:07I can't see Inter not scoring.
18:10I think they're going to have to go and score.
18:11I think it's one of them, Kompany, when he's thinking about how do we gun through this
18:14tyre, I think it's going to get to the point where they're going to have to go and they're
18:17going to have to press, you know, right from the off and put it on them.
18:20Because you can't let, as soon as this Inter Milan team slows the game down, or they
18:24get into a rhythm, they're so hard to break down.
18:26Yeah, they didn't play quick enough, I don't think, Bayern.
18:28And I feel sorry for Vincent Kompany.
18:29He's done a brilliant job.
18:30They're probably going to win the Bundesliga.
18:32In a crucial time of the season, they missed so many important players.
18:35Upa Meccano, Alphonso Davies and Musiala.
18:38And I think that probably showed today.
18:40He'll have a game plan for the game in Milan.
18:42But it is going to be really tricky, because defensively, they don't look the same if they're
18:47missing so many important players.
18:48And it's unlikely anyone's going to be back as well.
18:50Hopefully Moyer could be back, maybe.
18:52Potentially, yeah.
18:53Potentially.
18:53But I think the game was pretty tight, but I just thought the big moments in Inter were
18:57too good for Bayern today.
18:58Yeah, they haven't lost at San Siro in 14 games in the Champions League.
19:02But the last team to win there was Bayern in 2022.
19:07So, you never know.
19:08No, it's doable.
19:09I mean, and I think Vincent's done a brilliant job of giving these players confidence and
19:12belief.
19:13And I think they'll have a go, without question.
19:15There's always surprises.
19:17But they need a big night from Harry Kane.
19:19I thought Lisset was terrific today.
19:20But offensively, he was probably one of the only ones that kind of, you know, was the shining
19:25light for them.
19:26Well, the road back to Munich continues tomorrow, as the other two quarterfinals get underway.
19:31On this side of the draw, Barcelona take on Dortmund at Montjuic.
19:37While in Paris, another huge night ahead for Aston Villa, who look to continue their remarkable
19:42renaissance in Europe.
19:45Another brilliant night ahead.
19:48That PSG against Aston Villa game absolutely really stands out.
19:53Do you think Unai Emery can go back in and haunt his former club?
19:58Well, certainly do.
19:59I mean, all English eyes will be right behind Aston Villa.
20:02You know, it's great.
20:03What they've done this season already has been remarkable.
20:05Unai Emery's done a great job.
20:07Do I think they'll do it?
20:08No, I don't.
20:09I think this PSG side is the real deal.
20:11But they must, and they must bring the game back to Villa Park and not be more than a
20:16goal down.
20:16Stay in it.
20:17And Villa Park, that can be a factor in the tie.
20:20Do you fancy Villa to get something there, Owen?
20:23Of course.
20:23I mean, I think at home, you know, I think that, you know, with that crowd and that support,
20:28I think they have to believe it's going to be tough.
20:30I think PSG are the best team left in it, just the football that they've played.
20:34But Unai Emery's a master.
20:35Maybe not in the Champions League.
20:36In the Europa League, he's a master of winning these knockout ties.
20:40So I think you'll have a game plan for him.
20:42You think about Rashford, Asensio, Morgan Rodgers, who's in the form of his life, Oli Watkins.
20:47They've got perfect players on the counter and they'll get chances.
20:50So this is going to be a heck of a game.
20:53It really will.
20:54Joe says he doesn't think Barcelona would have enough to get passed in.
20:58So they've got to get past Dortmund first, of course.
21:01But their attack is absolutely lethal, isn't it?
21:05With Lewandowski, with Lamal and Rafinha in such good form as well.
21:09So they are a lot of people's favourites.
21:13Hansi Flick has done an incredible job with that group of players.
21:16With the high line that they're playing, as aggressive as they are, everybody's playing amazing.
21:20Yamal, Lewandowski, Rafinha.
21:23Pedri's back in the form of his life.
21:24De Jong's playing brilliant.
21:26They'll smash Dortmund.
21:28That's for sure.
21:29Do you think?
21:30Yeah, yeah.
21:30But Dortmund pushed them close in the league phase when they met.
21:33It was 3-2.
21:34No, I think they're going to get it.
21:35And then they get into the...
21:38The only thing is that high line.
21:39But I think Hansi Flick won six trophies with Bayern Munich in one season with that high line.
21:44Barcelona are playing out of sight at the moment.
21:47So I really believe they could win the Champions League easily, Barcelona, the way they're playing.
21:53I really believe everybody...
21:54I've never seen a team so full of confidence playing the football that they play.
21:57Owen said, Dortmund are going to get it tomorrow night.
22:00Joe, do you agree with that?
22:01Yeah, I believe that.
22:02I believe that.
22:03But I don't think Barcelona will beat Inter Milan or Munich.
22:09Having said that, I think Inter Milan are the favourites.
22:12But I just think this might be a year or two early for this new Barcelona.
22:18In two years' time, this team will be ready to win the Champions League for sure.
22:22We will see.
22:23What a night to look forward to tomorrow as well.
22:25We've also got plenty more live sport to look forward to here on TNT Sports and Discovery+.
22:32Right now on to there's Major League Baseball action between the White Sox and Guardians.
22:38Then from midnight here on one, the tip-off team previewed tonight's NBA doubleheader.
22:44Tomorrow afternoon, we've got top-class cycling from Spain with stage three of the Tour of the Basque Country.
22:50And then, of course, there is another huge night in the Champions League.
22:55PSG against Aston Villa, plus that game between Barcelona and Dortmund.
23:01And that's followed by our highlight show at 10.30.
23:04That's it from us tonight, though.
23:08My thanks to Owen and Jo for your company tonight.
23:11Good to see you.
