00:00What happens if you don't vote in the elections?

00:02Picture this, you have a pre-booked flight and what's this?

00:05Voting day for the elections has been announced to be on the same day you land in Bali.

00:10Now what?

00:12Fine? Arrest? Canning?

00:15Well, not exactly.

00:17In Singapore, all citizens aged 21 and above are legally required to vote.

00:22And according to the elections department, voting is a part of the responsibilities of being an adult Singapore citizen.

00:29However, if you failed to show up at voting booths during an election, your name gets removed from the registers of electors.

00:37What this means is that you won't be able to vote in future elections and you can't run as a candidate if that was ever in your plans.

00:44But fear not, you can apply to get your name restored to the registers and the ELD will do so for free as long as it is a valid reason.

00:53If you were just trying to be cheeky, a $50 administrative fee will be incurred.

00:58So, although it's not the end of the world, you still shouldn't miss the elections on purpose.
