28:12Ecologist Sue Fritzke is talking about the new boardwalk that stretches over the Cooks Meadow area.
28:22Park authorities and advocates applauded the opening of the new public walkway today, the culmination of a six-year restoration project.
28:30It's just going to be a nice experience for people to be able to walk across the meadow, experience that meadow, but not harm it.
28:37Only 4% of the meadows are left in Yosemite National Park.
28:41That's why park authorities say it was critical to preserve the 35 acres of Cooks Meadow.
28:47Meadows in the low elevations of the Sierra Nevada have been impacted by development, lots of damning, things like that.
28:57Historians say once upon a time, this meadow was used for livestock and agriculture.
29:02The early pioneers drained this meadow, dug ditches here, and built a road through here.
29:07But today, volunteers have restored the meadow and its natural conditions.
29:11That's what they're going to find today, is this place has been restored.
29:15It'll be what they remember from years gone by.
29:18Jack Finney, a 19-year volunteer at Yosemite, first started visiting the park in the 1920s.
29:23Today, he says, the restored meadow and newly rebuilt boardwalk.
29:27Are a step in the right direction.
29:29It's better that way, and it'll last a long time, and it's a big improvement.
29:33An improvement that will preserve the park for generations to come.
