Thunderstorms lead to flash floods and gusty winds in the Southeast

Repeated days of storms are causing flash flooding in parts of the Southeast.

00:00The flooding that we're dealing with, though, as we're traveling down the river from Vicksburg,

00:04all these twists and turns all the way down to Baton Rouge,

00:07major flooding in effect there underway at the areas near Baton Rouge.

00:12Flood walls are protecting the most populated areas,

00:14but there are rural areas where there are homes in water now because of the rain

00:17from two to three weeks ago, hundreds of miles away to the north.

00:21Here we've got some downpours today.

00:22Some of these have been bringing flash flooding.

00:24Here we have Barnwell, South Carolina, with some ongoing flash flooding.

00:28Here's Augusta, Georgia, on the east side of that area, into South Carolina.

00:33Flash flooding in progress there.

00:34Then heading up into northern parts of Kentucky, here we have a little bit of flash flooding ongoing there

00:38in southeastern parts of Boone, south-central parts of Kenton and Campbell counties here.

00:44We're dealing with a little bit of flash flooding right now into this area east of Interstate 75,

00:49so southern parts of Kenton and Campbell counties of Kentucky, some ongoing flash flooding.

00:55And we're going to have more of the same here Friday.

00:57Slow-moving showers and storms to the north.

00:59We stay hot and dry to the south.

01:01So future radar, clusters of thunderstorms.

01:04There is an actual front Friday night into Saturday that actually moves this through the region,

01:09so that'll be a bit of a change.

01:11And we'll have that cooler, drier flow into Nashville and Memphis for much of Saturday afternoon.

01:15So we do get a break for some.

01:17We're not going to see much, though, into Florida.

01:19So, again, a little bit of downpour action Saturday morning.

01:22It would turn cooler and drier to the north, but we do stay hot to the south.

01:25And look at this, record-challenging highs.

01:27We expect to break a record high on Saturday.

01:29And Punta Gorda, you've been dealing with some broiling heat here this week.

01:3394, that would be a degree past where we were on the same date in 1950, 1958, 1975, 93.

01:39We're on track for 94.

01:40Also, Baton Rouge, we should tie the record from the 60s, late 80s, and then just last year at 89 degrees for the same calendar day.

01:48Into Sunday, a little cooler into the Carolinas, but still some heat for the Gulf Coast.

01:53Showers and storms to the north and the nature of Sunday's heat.

01:57Still close to record highs.

01:59We're forecasting almost record highs in most of these areas.

02:02But in Pensacola, we actually are forecasting a true record by 2 degrees there.

02:0688 degrees would do it.

02:07Previous record, 86 from the same day back in 1970.

02:10So some big-time heat within a degree of the record in College Station, Texas.

02:14Into Natchitoches, Louisiana, and into Mobile, Alabama as well.

02:18So pretty impressive heat.

02:19Maybe not so impressive may not be the right word.

02:22People are probably looking forward to a break here as the heat escalates farther west.
