Another round of May storms brings heavy rain to the Northeast

Wet weather is expected to continue into the start of Mother's Day weekend across the Northeast.

00:00You step a bit west and you get into an area where there's some very heavy rain falling

00:04into the Worcester Hills, for example, and our severe thunderstorm warning's been replaced by

00:09an ongoing flash flood warning into Worcester County until 9-15. This is really dumping here,

00:15and as we loop this again, you'll notice there's not a whole lot of movement here in areas seeing

00:18the heavy rain, continue to see the heavy rain. So this is an increasing concern here into areas

00:24around Sterling, and as we zoom in here and use the eyedropper tool to estimate rainfall amounts

00:30past 24 hours, most of this in the past two hours, four inches of rain coming in from one area here

00:35between Barr and Holden into Worcester County, Massachusetts. So again, that's one estimate,

00:40and just for a little context, you get east to less than an inch here, just a couple dozen miles,

00:45maybe a dozen miles to the northeast of there. So again, a lot of variety there in the rainfall

00:50amounts, but again, some areas in localized fashion, picking up three or four-plus inches

00:55of rain. One area where we're glad to see more rain coming is into the Berks County area,

01:00northern Lancaster County areas from Reading down into areas near Denver of PA. Now,

01:04there was a tornado reported in the Denver, Pennsylvania area there in northern Lancaster

01:08County back on, I think it was Sunday, but we need some rain there in Reading. We're still dealing

01:14with a significant drought in that area, so that's decent rain there to see. And then we step a little

01:18farther south, and the trend is still a little bit stormier here into parts of West Virginia and

01:22eastern Kentucky, with severe weather up into parts of Pike County, Martin County as well,

01:27and then on the West Virginia side, Logan County, Boone County, and it's also into Oak Hill,

01:32so areas not far from the area of I-64. From Kanawha County, way southeast of Charleston,

01:39down into Fayette County, home to Fayetteville, a severe thunderstorm warning is in progress there.

01:44So as we take a look at other concerns here, the slow-moving thunderstorms remain a big problem,

01:50but we're moving forward with, again, the risk here for some additional thunderstorms that will

01:55bring us some relief. Again, the drought's been a big problem. The latest drought severity index has

02:00actually cut the drought away from central New Jersey, but north, south, and west, it continues.

02:04We could use more rain here, and we will see some more rain. It's really nice and comfortable down

02:09into Virginia Beach, 74 there, but only 49 in Buffalo. A lot of variety here on the temperature map,

02:14and the rain continues over the next two days. Some of you will see two to four inches of rain

02:19in the eastern Poconos into central parts of New England. This all exits, though, in time for

02:24Mother's Day, which will be beautiful in the northeast, Damien. So this is a win-win forecast,

02:28Jeff, because not only are we getting some much-needed beneficial rainfall for the drought-stricken

02:32areas and the areas across New Jersey that have been dealing with wildfires, but it's also going to

02:36clear out just in time for Mother's Day, just in time for the weekend, which I think this is the first time

02:40we've had a clear weekend in a while here for parts of the northeast, so overall good news here for us.
