Greens claim single lower house election win in Brisbane seat of Ryan

A diminished Greens party is also searching for a new leader. Queensland senator Larissa Waters would not rule out running for the top job as the minor party declared victory in the Brisbane electorate of Ryan.

00:07It might be a little bit lonely on the floor. I am going to desperately miss my mates.

00:13Elizabeth Watson-Brown has reclaimed Ryan in a tight race for the historically blue ribbon seat.

00:19I just want to thank the people of Ryan for again placing their trust in me to be their strong independent voice in Parliament.

00:27Attention is now turning to how the minor party lost three of its MPs, including the leader.

00:33We are going to be combing over the entrails of that.

00:36Yes, we will consider whether we have any lessons to learn.

00:40And of course, we're absolutely devastated that we've lost three magnificent men.

00:46Senator Larissa Waters isn't ruling out a tilt for the Greens leadership.

00:51We've got a process to go through and I won't be making any comments about that.

00:55In 2022, the Greens stunned the country when they took out three seats here in Brisbane.

01:01Now they're reduced to just one.

01:03The minor party will still have significant influence in the Senate, though, holding 11 positions on the crossbench.

01:10As the Greens regroup, the Liberals have elected a new leadership team, elevating Queenslander Ted O'Brien to deputy.

01:18Reaction in his Sunshine Coast electorate is mixed.

01:22I did meet him a few years ago and he did seem like a really lovely fellow.

01:27I think congratulations to him. I wouldn't vote for him personally.

01:30I don't agree with the whole nuclear power push.

01:35We'll see how he goes. If he dumps his nuclear policy, he might be a bit better.
