another step back gonna have to wait not just till 2026 maybe even beyond with the gopher state
00:06
yeah minnesota is just again one of those states i mean at this point every kind of state that's
00:12
made any sort of strong push toward the passage is now kind of the one you look toward to do it
00:18
the next session and uh minnesota you know like you said every time i've ever since i've been
00:24
coming on the show has been trying to legalize it and you know there's always been a little bit of a
00:29
hope um you know a couple years ago it passed the house and and fell apart in the senate because
00:34
there was disagreements and you know last year we saw a very strong push at the end that said okay
00:40
there's a agreement uh on all parties and we're gonna get it done next year it passed you know
00:46
that agreement came together at the last hour and the session adjourned and we were like okay it's
00:54
gonna get get done next year and sure enough you know this year it started senator matt klein
00:59
introduced the bill that brought all the you know stakeholders together and and happy about it the
01:05
tribes the 11 tribes in minnesota that will would control it as a you know a monopoly uh were excited
01:12
you had the tracks the horse racing tracks who had been kind of the sore point because they wanted
01:18
either uh you know a license for themselves or a big revenue share they had that figured out
01:24
um the charity gaming aspect they had that figured out so it looked like you know the democrat farmer
01:29
labor party and the republicans who were more with the tracks all came together said okay this is great
01:36
well then it was introduced in its first session or first committee and the opposition reared its head
01:42
which you know i had been told last fall that there is bipartisan opposition strong enough to to doom it
01:47
and sure enough uh it did and what's interesting though is that was in february the whole session
01:53
goes on little to no talking about sports betting then there's a budget uh that they're putting together
02:00
and there was a proposal to include a study on sports betting and how to implement it and that was
02:05
stripped out in a committee where a chair said you know this uh we're too early in the discussion of
02:11
legalizing sports betting uh to study it and so it didn't make the budget uh the budget actually
02:17
didn't finish before the session adjourned on monday so there will be a special session whether or not
02:22
sports betting you know makes its way back into that discussion even just for a study is to be seen
02:28
uh but so far with the regular session adjourned on monday uh sports betting in minnesota will have to
02:34
wait at least another year uh but it doesn't seem like a whole lot of progress was made despite there
02:39
being that promising connection of all the parties involved wanting to get it done so
02:45
minnesota yeah we're just going to have to keep watching and and waiting and to see if anything else
02:51
uh can happen and finally pat we close it out with some debate on a potential tax hike in the state of
02:57
north carolina what are the odds that they raise tax rates on sports betting in north carolina yeah this is
03:05
an interesting one uh the senate of course last month introduced their proposal for a budget uh that
03:11
included a doubling of the tax rate from 18 to 36 percent and that you know includes appropriations
03:17
to the the university system which it already includes but now they're putting north carolina
03:23
north carolina state into it the house you know we were like okay well maybe the house will also
03:28
submit their budget with that same tax hike the house's proposal was released this week and does
03:34
not include a tax hike it just keeps it at 18 percent it does change uh the appropriations and so
03:41
that this part of it will definitely at some point be talked about in the conference committee because
03:46
of the differences in the budget proposals it will have to go to a conference committee and see how it
03:51
uh shapes up and and we'll see if any sort of raise comes it comes it probably won't be 36 percent but
03:57
it might stay at 18 or it might go up a little bit we'll see
