Four council blocks in St Jude's Bristol are in urgent need of structural repairs,
00:06
raising serious questions about safety for the hundreds of people who live there.
00:12
These buildings, Charlton House, Havilord House, Langton House and John Cousins House, were built in the 1960s.
00:21
A recent structural survey found that in three of them, floors aren't properly tied to the walls.
00:27
That means in a worst case scenario, like a gas explosion or major fire, parts of the buildings could fail.
00:35
And it's not just the structure. Residents have spent years complaining about the damp, mould and leaks.
00:42
Some even buying their own paint to fight back.
00:46
Now, the council has paused all refurbishments to focus on the urgent safety upgrades.
00:52
Gas has been cut off, fire wardens are patrolling day and night,
00:56
and alarms are being installed.
00:59
Tyndall House, the fifth block on the estate, was also surveyed,
01:03
but found to be structurally different and safer.
01:06
Still, its planned refurbishment has also been paused,
01:09
while the council directs resources towards emergency repairs on the more vulnerable buildings.
01:15
Especially after last year's emergency evacuation at Barton House.
01:20
While no evacuation is planned in St. Jude's, many families say that they feel left in limbo,
01:27
unsure how long they'll be living in buildings with such serious issues.
01:31
City Hall says that the buildings are safe to live in, for now,
01:35
and that they're acting fast to prevent any risk.
01:38
But, for tenants, it's another blow in a long wait for their homes that they were promised.
01:44
So, let's see.
