Wild, damaging scenes across much of the south-east.

00:00Hello it's meteorologist Angus Hines here at the Bureau of Meteorology.
00:03Today is Wednesday the 25th of June and today is the last day of the severe weather event
00:08which has impacted southeastern parts of the country.
00:11It will be subsiding tomorrow but before that happens we've got more damaging winds,
00:15more very high tides and more snow in the forecast.
00:19Let's get into it with this severe weather update.
00:21This is the weather situation, it is a cold front causing most of the issues at the moment
00:26but we'll see through Wednesday afternoon this cold front is peeling off the country out into the Tasman Sea
00:31and conditions are really settling down for Thursday.
00:34So it is really the next 6 to 12 hours where we need to be alert and aware of what's going on
00:39and for many people over that time the main thing will be damaging wind gusts.
00:44We've seen the damaging winds ease across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania
00:48but those damaging winds are continuing across New South Wales for Wednesday afternoon.
00:52We're mostly looking at strong winds in the Great Dividing Ranges which is these inland areas here
00:58but notice the warnings go out towards the coast as well and that does include Wollongong, Sydney
01:03and the Hunter region and Newcastle so there's some pretty big urban areas affected by these strong winds
01:08through the next few hours.
01:10Also note the warning just reaches the border and goes into the far south of inland Queensland.
01:16In these yellow areas we could see gusts up to 110km an hour over the next few hours
01:21and that is still enough to cause some damage through the afternoon.
01:25We could see fallen trees and branches, we could see dangerous driving conditions
01:28especially in those higher roads and alpine passes
01:31and there's a chance that we could see some power outages as well.
01:35This should all wind down as those winds subside tonight or overnight.
01:39Alongside the wind we have some powerful ocean conditions
01:42including some 6 to 8 metre waves across the stretch of coastline today
01:46as well as some large waves building around New South Wales.
01:50These powerful waves will be accompanied by very high tides
01:54particularly across the Victorian coastline including around Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne
01:58also southeastern parts of Tasmania including around that Hobart area.
02:03In these yellow regions we could see the tide levels significantly higher
02:07than what you would typically see at high tide.
02:10If you add these high tides and those big waves together
02:12we're talking about the risk of coastal inundations,
02:15sea water up and over low-lying coastal areas.
02:18We'll also see hazardous conditions on the water
02:21if you're out on your boat swimming or surfing
02:23and there's a chance for some coastal erosion
02:25with those powerful waves maybe causing some damage to exposed beaches.
02:29I would also like to mention snow.
02:31Now there's no warnings out for snow
02:33but it's a big part of the weather situation for the day today
02:36because we've got fairly extensive snow
02:38across all alpine areas through southeastern Australia.
02:41The snow will fall to relatively low levels as well.
02:43I've just overlaid the levels
02:45and we could see snow at or anywhere above
02:48500 metres in altitude for Tasmania,
02:51800 metres for the Grampians in western Victoria,
02:54600 metres for the northeast ranges of Victoria,
02:57700 metres for the Snowys and the Canberra Hills
02:59and 700 metres up around the Blue Mountains inland of Sydney.
03:03Some of these areas up in the Alps through here
03:05could see half a metre of snow today.
03:07We've already seen about 30 centimetres
03:09so another 20 would give us that half a metre mark.
03:12For Tasmania and for some of these other areas
03:14it's likely to be closer to 2 or to 10 centimetres worth of snowfall.
03:19So we've got another 6 to 12 hours of severe weather
03:22before the end is in sight.
03:24Much calmer conditions heading in our way on Thursday.
03:27Stay up to date with the latest on the Bureau's website and app.
03:29Thanks for watching.
