Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson Rules Out 'Interfering' With ICE Raids, But CPD Won't Work With ICE

During a press briefing on Tuesday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke about cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

00:08immigration enforcement is set up local police perimeters around schools to

00:13shield students from federal agents without warrants. Have you

00:18considered or would you consider setting up CPD perimeters around public

00:22spaces in Chicago, including schools, or does that not fall under the

00:27department's purview? Excuse me. You know, again, it's unconscionable at a time in

00:36which so many working people and poor people need government to show up for

00:40them that this administration, the Trump administration, has caused so much

00:45consternation and division. Look, we are welcoming city ordinance. Our local police

00:52department will not ever cooperate with ICE. Whatever their constitutional

01:05authority is, that is obviously relegated to the Trump administration. All of our

01:16sister agencies, city departments, have been thoroughly briefed by a corporate

01:24council, and I'll pass it over to her in a second, about what they can and cannot do.

01:30Mary? Good morning. I appreciate the question. The mayor referenced the

01:37guidelines that we issue to all city departments, as well as guidances to city

01:41agencies, and Alder Corps, so they would know the parameters on what they can, acts

01:48they can take and not take. We are prohibited from viewed as, quote, interfering with a

01:56federal law enforcement action. The mayor also noted that CPD will not support ice

02:04related actions. We do stay in contact with 12 other cities around the country, and we

02:11are constantly examining the steps they're taking and reevaluating what

02:16additional steps we might take in the city of Chicago.
