UK-France deal will see just 'six per cent' of migrants returned across the Channel, Philp says

00:02The Sunday Express front page quotes your former colleague David Jones,

00:06who's defected to reform, the latest Tory to do so,

00:09claiming that the migrant deal with France quotes,

00:12won't stop a single boat. Do you agree with that analysis?

00:17Good morning, Camilla. Yes, I do.

00:20Because under this so-called deal, it's really a bit of a gimmick in my view,

00:24only 6% of illegal immigrants crossing the channel will get sent back to France.

00:29The other 94% will get to stay in the UK.

00:33And obviously, having 94% of illegal immigrants staying in the UK

00:36will not act as any deterrent at all.

00:39It's another gimmick, just like Keir Starmer's smash-the-gang gimmick a year or so ago,

00:44which you'll notice he never mentions any more,

00:47because so far this year we've seen record-ever numbers

00:50of illegal immigrants crossing the English Channel,

00:53the highest number in history so far this year.

00:55And I'm afraid this so-called deal, this gimmick last week,

00:59is going to make no difference to that whatsoever.

01:02Well, you say it's a gimmick.

01:03The Tories were constantly banging on about stopping the boats

01:06and smashing the gangs.

01:08And it must have been a gimmick when you were doing it,

01:10because you didn't do either, did you?

01:12Well, not entirely, Camilla.

01:15So, first of all, in 2023, the calendar year,

01:18that was our last full year in office,

01:20we actually got the small boat numbers down by about 30%.

01:24So that was quite a big step in the right direction.

01:26And we then had the second step in the plan

01:28was to basically remove 100% of arrivals

01:32the minute their feet touched the shore using the Rwanda scheme.

01:36And obviously, common sense tells you

01:38that if you've got a 100% or close to 100% chance

01:42of getting removed,

01:43then you're not going to bother attempting the crossing

01:45in the first place.

01:47Something very similar worked in Australia about 12 years ago.

01:50Now, that went through a whole load of legal challenges.

01:52We had to pass a new law through Parliament.

01:54It was ready to go last summer.

01:55It was ready to go at the end of July,

01:57just after the election,

01:58but it was handed to Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper

02:01on a plate.

02:02And what did they do?

02:03They cancelled it just a few days before it was due to start.

02:07And as a consequence,

02:09instead of continuing the downward trend,

02:11immigration across the channel,

02:13illegal immigration has surged by over 40% since the election.

02:17And it's now been the worst year in history,

02:20thanks to their ineptitude.

02:22Auro, there's an interesting expose in the Mail on Sunday

02:25entitled Boat Migrants Crazy Golf Trips On You.

02:29And this is talking about Kent County Council

02:32splurging all sorts of staggering sums,

02:35including £102 on Fortnum & Mason goods,

02:39Disney and Netflix subscriptions worth £10,000,

02:42an Amazon bill of £162,000.

02:45All apparently, according to Zia Yousef,

02:47that was ascribed to the asylum budget.

02:50I was reading the story thinking,

02:51what is this nonsense?

02:53How could this have happened?

02:54And then I realised that it must have happened

02:56under the Conservatives' watch.

02:57Because before the last local elections,

03:00wasn't Kent in control of the Conservatives?

03:05Yeah, well, I don't know when that expenditure was incurred

03:08or whether it was paid by the Home Office.

03:09It could have happened after the last election.

03:11I don't know,

03:12because it's the Home Office that runs the asylum budget.

03:14But everything you just read out, Camilla,

03:16without question, is a total...

03:19OK, well, the year to June of this year,

03:21that's obviously after the last general election.

03:23Yeah, but it's not...

03:24You were in charge until the locals,

03:29which were in May.

03:30So it's mostly on your watch, isn't it?

03:32Well, that was Kent County Council.

03:34Yes, it was Kintori run, isn't it?

03:35And Labour have been running the Home Office

03:40since July of last year.

03:41But frankly, whoever is responsible,

03:43that should obviously never have happened.

03:45That is absolutely outrageous.

03:46And I can tell you one thing,

03:47if I become Home Secretary,

03:48that nonsense will stop completely.

03:49What did you make of Macron saying

03:52that Brits have been sold a lie on Brexit?

03:55I mean, to be fair,

03:57the French president's not wrong, is he?

03:59Boris Johnson kept on banging on

04:00about us taking back control of our borders

04:02and then seemed intensely relaxed about mass migration.

04:09Well, I mean, first of all,

04:10I don't think politicians in any country

04:12should denigrate the results of democratic elections,

04:15whether those are referenda or national elections.

04:17I think any politician of any colour

04:20and in any country should respect elections

04:23when they happen and respect the views of the public.

04:26And to say, oh, they made a mistake

04:27or all that kind of stuff,

04:29I think is actually damaging to democracy.

04:31So I think those words were not particularly well chosen.

04:35Look, on the levels of legal migration in recent years,

04:38I've said it before, Camilla, I've said it to you,

04:40I'll say it again,

04:41they have been far, far too high

04:42under successive governments for very many years.

04:46But in recent years, they've been far, far too high.

04:50So as we've discussed previously,

04:52we need to have a binding annual cap set by Parliament.

04:55I'm not going to stop asking you what the cap should be.

04:57We haven't announced the number yet.

04:59We haven't, you keep asking

05:01and we are going to come up with a number.

05:03It won't be this morning.

05:04We look forward to that.

05:05It'll be at a far, far lower level

05:06than anything we've seen in recent years

05:08because it's been far too high.

05:10We must end the era of mass, low-skilled migration.

05:12It's got to stop.
