00:00The UK government is changing the way your household waste is collected.

00:04Here's everything you need to know. The scheme, titled Simple Recycling in England,

00:09will begin on April 1st, 2026. Regardless of your previous situation,

00:15under the new rules all households should divide their recycling into four containers.

00:20One for residual, non-recyclable waste. Another for food waste, mixed with garden waste if

00:27appropriate. One for paper and card. And finally, one for all other dry recyclable materials such as

00:35plastic, metal and glass. These containers may take the form of bags, bins or stackable boxes.

00:43The specifics will be decided by your local council. As the name suggests,

00:48the purpose of this new initiative is to make recycling uniform across England.

00:53According to Gov.uk, citizens will be able to recycle the same materials across England,

00:58whether at home, work or school, and will no longer need to check what is acceptable for

01:03recycling in their local area. A universal standard will ensure that everything that can be collected

01:10for household recycling is collected in every region. Simple recycling will also end the postcode

01:16lottery of bin collections in England, whereby councils collect different materials for recycling,

01:22causing confusion for households.
