00:01South Africans are rolling up their sleeves and hitting the kitchen in honour of Mandela Day.
00:06Since 2009, citizens have been volunteering 67 minutes, one for every year Nelson Mandela serve the public.
00:14This year, a team of volunteer cooks is aiming high, preparing 67 litres of soup to help feed the hungry.
00:21In our first year, I think 2020, we already exceeded the 67,000 litres. Last year we did 104,000 litres of soup in one day with our participating kitchen.
00:35So there are hotels and culinary schools like HTA, you know, feeding schemes, our hubs, they're all cooking where they are with rescued, donated produce and putting in as many litres as we can.
00:50Dozens of chefs, community cooks, caterers and culinary students are joining forces in kitchens to make a difference.
01:00If you look at the prices right now, they've gone up out of the roof, so affordability is a problem.
01:07And if you look at unemployment as well, there's a lot of people that are unemployed.
01:11So what are we doing about it as people in this country?
01:14We're saying that as chefs in this country, we can highlight that and do our beat as well as chefs and make sure that because we are skilled in that regard, we can also chip in and help.
01:25So the Mandela Day highlights that, hunger. It highlights poverty. Number three, it highlights that there is initiatives that are good that we can do.
01:36South Africa is a top food producer, yet over 20 million people go hungry daily.
01:41Experts are pointing to unemployment and rising prices made worse by climate change and inequality, while 10 million tons of food go to waste each year.
01:52So I'm sure I think it's very similar to my mind.
01:56I think a lot of people are trying to get a lot of money.
01:59I think it's hard to say a lot.
02:01I think there are a lot of people that are getting better at school.
02:04So I'm sure it doesn't have a lot of people.
02:06I think the Don't really miss any time because even if I get paid enough or from that day, I think it's really okay.
