Heat dome sends record-challenging temperatures across the Northeast

Major cities in the Northeast could break record highs on July 25, but the heat is also coming with a risk of severe storms.

00:00So here's overall what we are tracking. This heat dome is working its way across Kentucky

00:04and it is not only intensifying but as you can see here it is expanding in scope and this is

00:09going to encompass more and more of the northeast including portions of New England. But in addition

00:14to the heat we're also tracking storms. Widespread showers, storms and severe weather here across

00:19parts of the northeast. We'll even have a level two zone on our AccuWeather Risk Impact Scale

00:23here for Boston. So large hail, damaging winds, flooding rainfall will definitely be in the

00:28forecast for tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening. Low end for tornadoes but it's a non-zero

00:32threat so heads up for that. Now's a good time to download our free AccuWeather app to stay up to

00:36date with the latest. But overall here as we head into your Friday afternoon, widespread showers,

00:42widespread storms. The overall potential for severe weather will move in late Friday afternoon

00:46into Friday evening. The storms will be moving from west to east. Now we were talking about

00:52record-breaking temperatures. Here it is right here. All these cities will be within range of tying if

00:58it's not setting record highs. So Philly, number to beat, 97 degrees set back in 2016.

01:02Our AccuWeather forecast for tomorrow, 97. So it looks like we will tie a nine-year-old

01:07temperature record in Philly here as we head throughout tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening.

01:11So across the rest of the region we'll see some storm-cooled 70s and 80s to the north,

01:16but we'll see sweltering conditions to the south. I mean look at this difference between Pittsburgh

01:20and Richmond. Pittsburgh 88 degrees, some showers and storms. Richmond 97. The storms move in later in the

01:26evening, which is why the daytime heating is going to peak there across parts of the mid-Atlantic coastline.

01:31And it's going to be hot. AccuWeather real-field temperatures will climb into that 105, 110 range

01:37here for Friday afternoon. But the best news of all, we're going to see some big changes moving in

01:41as we head into late next week. Take a look at this. A big dip in the jet stream is going to be

01:47pulling in some cooler, quote-unquote cooler, but less humid conditions. So what's going to end up

01:52happening is that we're going to see lower humidity values, which is going to make it feel a lot more

01:56comfortable here across this region. So dry air for Saturday, more storms moving in. So it's going

02:01to be dry to the north, stormy in the middle, and then sweltering off to the south.
