The Liberals are doubling down on their calls for Labor to concede the state election, saying that they want to get on with the job of governing, but Labor leader Dean Winter is keeping his options open and key independents say they won’t be rushed into a decision, meaning Tasmanians may have to wait weeks to learn who'll form government.

00:00Facing cameras and standing firm, Dean Winter and Labor aren't conceding.
00:07No one party was able to secure 18 seats, which means that no one party has a mandate to govern.
00:14Mr Winter is maintaining Jeremy Rockliffe can have the first attempt at forming government.
00:19But he's also still courting the support of the crossbench, including the Greens.
00:24I'm not asking anyone to compromise on their values or beliefs.
00:28I'm asking people to work together and there's a lot more that we agree on that we disagree on.
00:32The Labor Party got the worst vote they've ever had, I mean in over a century.
00:39He should be honourable, he should concede and he should let us get on with the job.
00:43The Liberals turning up the volume on their calls for Labor to back off.
00:48He said he would not do a deal with the Greens, he can only be in government with a deal with the Greens.
00:53As they pledge collaborative government going forward.
00:56What we would like to do is build on what we had in the last parliament.

01:03Who eventually holds government will be up to the crossbenchers though.
01:06Three of them releasing a joint statement today saying no one party has a mandate.
01:12That they expect negotiations to take weeks.
01:15And warning that they won't be pressured or railroaded by either side.
01:20Re-elected Franklin MP David O'Byrne says it's a power that must be wielded wisely.
01:26Urging his fellow independents to respect the major parties.
01:3070% of the people in Tasmania voted for one of the three major parties.
01:34They have legitimacy at the table as well.
01:36And if you come to the table with demands and take it or leave it.
01:39Then we're back in an election.
01:41And nobody wants that.
01:46formula for that.
01:47Then we must be able to do something.
01:49So we will now be able to get the New Year's further.
01:50Then we have to do something about going forward.
01:52Unless we have to plan to carry out something.
01:55And if we do something about that, we'll be able to do something.
01:58And that's going to be able to do something.
01:59If you have to take it or not, we'll do something about that.
